General Gearknob

Hi all,
The folks have just bought a 2003 ducato, camper, and the gearknob is a lift up reverse. However its abit tacky and worn down. How can it be removed without cutting it away, if possible, so if they go to sell it we can stick the original bck on?

Sorry to diversify a bit, don't know the answer but how come it's worn on a van that's 2003 ? Campers are usually low mileage so you wouldn't expect that sort of thing to happen.

Its got just shy of 20'000 miles on the clocks. The gear knob is just very smooth and dull and un-attractive so want it to go lol
