Hi folks, some advice please.
Converted my 500, non synchro box to a synchro box using a salvage 126 box and some new parts.
So far, so good.
Just taken it for a test drive. Synchro is good, but there is a noticeable whine in 1st and 4th (particularly under load).
It needs to come out and I've most likely reached the limit of my expertise.
Any ideas on where to send it?
We're in Cambridge.
Thanks in advance!

Don't know about specialists but if noise changes when foot on or off the accelerator it can be the preload on the diff crown wheel and pinion set up and how deep they are meshed together can be critical. There is a lot online about setting up diffs in general terms.
Especially if you mixed and matched gears etc.

I used engineer’s blue in setting up the crownwheel & pinion. Looked ok to me. It’s quiet in 2nd & 3rd - off & under load, so I’m thinking that rules out crownwheel & pinion? Either way, I think this needs to be in the hands of a specialist?

The meshing of crown wheel and pinion should be correct then doing it that way, though the actually preload of the pinion gear can still be affected.
However if there is a mix of gears from different boxes with different amounts of wear it may be that, although that is often what "gearbox specialists" some times do anyway;).
It's many years since I set up any diffs and they were mainly just rwd conventional axles.

I realise that he is a far bit away from you, but there is a man just outside Weston-Super-Marewho could probably set your gearbox up for you (he is VERY experienced with 500/126 engines and gearboxes). Just for interest, why did you fit a 126 gearbox. Also, what oil are you using in it. I had a conversation with "Castrol Classic Oils" (in Swavesy) and they reccomended their (naturally!) 20/50 engine oil. That is what I have in the 126 gearbox in my 500 (the car came with the box, otherwise I would have stuck with the 500 box) and I have had no problems at all. If you would like the contact details for the gent, contact me direct ( [email protected] ) and I will pass them onto you.

Hi Tom, I used Classic Oils. They supplied Castrol Classic EP90.
The idea was to follow that well trodden path - fit a 126 box with synchro, whilst using the original 500 bellhousing & driveshafts. On opening up the 126 box, it was a bit grim, but the synchro bits I needed were good.
I’ll get in touch with you. Best, Norman

Thanks to Tom for the referral. The gentleman in Weston-Super-Mare came good. He did a fantastic job and is absolutely fastidious. The car is much more ‘useable’ for the whole family. Quite tall gearing which shows up the lack of grunt from the standard engine. I think a mild engine upgrade will be a nice project this winter. I look forward to researching the subject!

I have put down my thoughts and suggestions for tuning the 500 (and 126) engines on paper---would you like a copy of the 500 paper?

Thanks Tom, I’d appreciate that.
I was thinking along the lines of just raising the cc’s a bit with new pistons & cylinders, perhaps a new inlet manifold & carb? Nothing too dramatic as I don’t want to alter the original appearance too much.

Just e-mail me direct [email protected] I will patch it through to you , with some suggestions as to how to 'warm-up' your engine and still have it looking standard
