I have just read a thread about a very similar gearbox failure. I was driving on M23 from Gatwick, taking the turning onto M25 and as I was going around the bend the gearbox failed. Luckily I was able to drift onto the hard shoulder. I tried in vain to re-jig the duologic gearbox but it refused to budge out of neutral - meanwhile cars whizzing passed me. Very frightening. Finally a police car turned up (I had called my family for help and they had arranged for a tow truck to turn up) and told me I couldn't 'park' there (as if I had a choice) and they said they would tow me around the corner to a safe place. The action of towing my car re-jigged the gearbox and I was able to drive off. A very frightening experience. This happened last December (2022).
A week ago I was driving on a dual carriageway and as I approached a roundabout a flashing red light appeared on the dashboard 'transmission failure' and as I went around the roundabout the power completely failed and I drifted just into the outside lane of the dual carriageway.. Of course I put my flashers on but in order to try and re-jig the gears I had to turn the engine off and therefore my lights. Again very frightening and very dark. Luckily other cars had to reduce their speed going around the roundabout but they could easily have crashed into me. After about 10 mins I managed to re-jig the gearbox and drive off.
What can be done about this? There is obviously a major problem with the duoligic gearbox. I had an automatic Abarth before with no problems (except it was stolen!)
I have just taken the car into a specialist Fiat garage and apparently it is going to cost me £800 + VAT as obviously it is very dangerous to drive the car when the gears can fail at any time.
