Technical Engine Timing

Hi there;

I recently bought a second hand 1.2 8V SOHC punto engine, without a timing belt. I am not sure the timing is in sinc just now.

Does anybody know how to set the timing for this type of engine, prior to fitting the timing belt.

Just hope they didn't take the belt off to hide a HG failiure or something.

Thanks for the link that was helpful, but I also need to know which way to turn the cam, and chank shafts, to line them up - clockwise or anti clockwise, Any idea's.

8v engine doesn't really matter but engine rotation is clockwise when facing the pulleys

The way the engine rotates ive been taught going in the oposite direction could cause damage? so clockwise.

only in an interference engine. never hurt any car i done the belt on.

If you rotate the crank the wrong way over and over the the oil pump will work backwards and suck the oil back from the bearings etc that it feeds. You wont do much damage doing this but it wont do any good either. so if possible then always try and turn the crank the right way.
