Fiat 500 (2011) petrol - burning / fishy smell from heater when on max, losing water and water in driver’s side footwell. Are these symptoms of a defective heater matrix? If so, how easy is this job for a non-mechanic? What am I looking at cost wise?

Sounds like it, £40 inc coolent not a difficult job, hardest bit is if you replace the pipes through the bulkhead(new ones usually come with matrix)-getting to the pipe clips undoing and replacing.
Be careful ordering with year might be a change in 2011

Hi..

Not sure about the smell

But dampfootwell and losingcoolant all tell a tale

Try using kitchen towel.. see if the DAMP is the same colour as your coolant ;)

There is a GUIDE in the panda section of me changing mine
