General Clunking/rubbing noise when driving

i have a 2007 (57 plate) grande punto active 1.2 and have done 19,700 miles in it. i have owned it since new.
the last month i have noticed a clunking/rubbing/chugging noise when accelerating and braking.
It only does it when the vehicle is moving and is loudest when the vehicle is in gear - if you coast the noise is very quiet. The noise is not there when the vehicle is stationary.
The noise appears to be coming from the front of the vehicle (possibly more on the passenger side)
Does anyone know what could be causing the noise??

jack it up and check the front wheel bearings have no play in them

have you checked the wheel bearing and cv joint area for play?

Thanks for your reply.. I took it into the garage yesterday and they have advised me that it is a broken gearbox bearing. I'm sooo annoyed as I have only done 19,000 miles and it is 4 years old!
