Hi dear Fiat owners!

I am in the process of buying a second hand Fiat GP 1.4 8v 57kW from year 2009.

This is my first ever Fiat (it's for my wife), so coming from a long line of Audis, I am a bit lost.

Car is in "Racing" trim, about 230 000 kilometers / 143 000 miles on the clock. It has no previous servicing history, so God knows what could its life had been.

Now, I have a couple of questions regarding engine oil and transmission fluid as I intend to change both as soon as I get the car.

Which oil (out of the two) should I go for?

1. Mannol Legend+Ester (ACEA A3/B4 - FIAT 9.55535-M2 - 0W40)

2. Mannol Energy Formula PD (ACEA C2/C3 - FIAT 9.55535-S2 - FIAT 9.55535-GH2 - VOLKSWAGEN 505.01 - 5W40)

I can't seem to find any 9.55550-MX3 75W85 transmission fluid so I had a look at these two:

1. Mannol Basic Plus (SAE 75W90 - API GL 4+)

2. Mannol FWD Getriebeoel (SAE 75W-85 - API GL-4)

I am lost, not sure which one should I get honestly. Any help please? :worship:

5w40 engine oil

Either of the gear oils you have quoted will be fine.

Plus have the cam belt and water pump replaced.

Thanks mate! I will have the cam belt and water pump replaced as well as spark plugs I guess. Any particular spark plugs brand I should look out for?

I found online that Fiat recommends NGK ZKR7A-10 spark plugs for this engine, but I am not sure if I will be able to source these.

Always worth having a look at Shop4parts. Remember if you're a paid up member of the forum here there's a discount with them

Thanks mate, but as I live in a third world country, I don't think the parcel would ever arrive. :ROFLMAO:

LP

U can get NGKs everywhere. Imaš na silux.ba. LP

Aaaaaahhh didn't realise this in time, ordered from some company in Serbia already. Hvala! :)

A za motorno ulje priporočujem ti Fuchs GT1 Titan 5w40. LP

Went with Total Quartz Energy 9000 5W-40. Probacu Fuchs sljedeci put.

Sorry, I can't understand your language and I'm much to incompetent with my computer to know how to translate it! I think this post is recommending Fuchs Titan GT1 5W-40 - This stuff : https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60166-fuchs-titan-gt1-xtl-5w-40-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx and this is just to say I use it in both my Panda 60hp and my boy's Punto 8 valve and I've no complaints at all. I also use Fuchs Titan GT1 Pro C-3 5W-30 - This stuff : https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-980-fu...lly-synthetic-engine-oil.aspx?VariantID=91534 in my Ibiza Eco TSI and it seems to love it. I notice also that Fuchs are now the supplier of the Quantum branded oil now sold by TPS (VAG trade parts supplier) which gives me confidence it's a high quality manufacturer.

PS You comment, in reply to the post about gearboxes, that you've become used to Audi gearboxes? I'm just wondering what brodare was saying in his/her post?

He said he was thinking about changing gearbox oil and my advice to him was not to because i read you can do more harm then good changing it at this point if its working rather well. And that its normal for fiat boxes to feel a little sluggish going into 1st and reverse especially when cold :)

Translation is quite simple to get a rough translation you can simply copy and paste the text into this website

It's won't be perfect but should give your a rough figure to base things on

Thanks very much for clearing that up for me, and thanks chris for the link, I'll give it a try.

With most gearbox designs 1st and reverse are often the most difficult to select for the simple reason that the output side of the gearbox, which is ultimately connected to the wheels, is not rotating whereas the input shaft will be rotating quite fast because, until you push the clutch pedal down, it will have been rotating at engine speed - which is very fast even at tick over. It will take a short while (seconds) for the shaft to spin down after you stand on the clutch pedal (assuming the clutch is not dragging) so, if you try to select 1st virtually as you stand on the pedal - and a lot of people do - then the synchromesh has to work very hard to align the input shaft speed to the stationary output side. Result? The gearlever takes a bit of effort to shift. Reverse can suffer the same problem but because it usually has no synchro you can crash the teeth if you are too quick - not at all good for the gearbox because apart from slightly damaging the reverse gears every time you do it you are also knocking off tiny wee bits of gear metal which will then happily travel around the gearbox with the oil and accelerate the wear of the other parts - especially bearings. Which is a good reason to change the oil from time to time. If you get into the habit when selecting reverse in particular, of saying to yourself, as you depress the clutch pedal, Clutch down, 2, 3, Select gear, That usually gives enough time for the rotating parts to slow very considerably and it's unlikely you'll get "gear crash". Intermediate gears, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc are usually more easily selected because the shafts are all rotating so less speed differential exists between the rotating components.

Regarding gearbox oil changes. I would agree you can get into trouble with it, mostly because people sometimes use an incorrect oil to refill with. For the Fiats I would consult Shop4parts website which makes a pretty good job of recommending the correct oil for any Fiat they list or an oil specialist like Opie Oils who will be able to make informed generic recommendations. If you then don't find it convenient to order from them you can use their recommendations to source a local equivalent. The other thing that sometimes catches people out when looking to drain/fill gearboxes is that they wrongly identify the drain/fill plugs. This can be absolutely catastrophic if you unscrew a bolt which is locating an important internal gearbox component. In fact there was a recent post where someone had done exactly that but had managed to get it reinstalled before the shaft inside had moved - Lucky or what?

A lot of manufacturers don't now recommend a scheduled transmission oil change and I think this is foolish. Like any lubricant it will degrade with age and use and contaminants, like those wee bits of gears and metal worn from the soft metal parts like bushings and selector forks, will build up . I do all our vehicles roughly every 50,000 miles and I can't remember when we last had an internal gearbox problem on any of them. Nearly always the box is smoother when changing gear and sometimes quieter running too. If you ever buy an automatic that's more than a couple of years old one of the first things I'd do is renew the transmission fluid and any internal filters.

My 07 Grand Punto owners manual specified Fiat 9.55535-M2. My 2012 owners manual specifies Fiat 9.55535-S2. I conclude that S2 has superseded M2 for Puntos. This applies to both the 1.2 and 1.4 8v engines.

Hth, Simon

I went with the Fiat 9.55535-M2 spec oil.

I assumed that Fiat 9.55535-S2 gives only slightly better fuel economy and is the way to go for EURO5 engines. Guess my EURO4 engine should be happy with Fiat 9.55535-M2. :D
