Can i just remove the plastic bit and clean it or do i have to remove the whole unit ?

I believe the main bulk of deposits will be inside that housing yes- worth a look with a torch inside the remaining pipes and clean what you can. I sheared an Allen key undoing the bolts as they were super super tight! You might be luckier

i pulled it off and stripped it down, found the plunger siezed , managed to free it off. Guess that was the problem

You definitely want to try and remove the whole unit as it will be full on carbon and oil mixed to a black sludge

Ideally want to try and scrape any build up from the pipe with a vacuum nearby to such any bits you lose out

But not usually enough Access for anything like that,

Nice job freeing it up! I run Hydra Diesel additive on my Grande Punto 1.9- It also ups the octane of fuel without the price tag of Premium fuels. They also have many other additives like EGR/DPF cleaner u put in each time you fill up and even two stroke additives for lawn mowers
Point being the fuel nowadays is not as clean burning as it used to be!
