Hi everyone new here,

I have had my stilo about a year and a half now with not too many problems but lately I have been having alot of errors.

Airbag failure - repaired using stilo guides

Brake lights not working 2 out of 10 times - need to sort this weekend

More imortantly the engine warning light that doesn't go out. Everytime i start my car, beep beep bloody beep and engine fault on dash with engine fault light staying on.

My stilo is 52 plate (reg early 03 on doc's) Active 1.6 3dr.

About 3 or 4 months ago I kept getting the oil pressure low light coming on everytime a come round the corner to my house, this is very intermittent, and after a top up off oil (did't really need it) it stopped so i put it down to that. Then the engine fault started happening and basically came on a few times now and then, then after a few weeks it came on permanently.

It has now been on for about 3months solid, yet i feel no diference in power at all, if anything it's running quite well, consumption is around 37mpg as usual, but the light on the dash is bugging me now. I do round trip of 60m a day and every two weeks go to leeds from leicestershire and it seems to be running like a dream apart from having to brake with the thought of someone whacking into the back of me due to brake lights.

The last day or so again i have been getting a oil pressure low fault again but the oil level is fine.

The car has always been easy to stall, even when i first got it, and it can idle kind of low, again ever since i have had it (about 1 1/2 years now).

Any ideas on the engine fault light??, or have i got to go to the local fiat garage who are monkeys, they fixed the wifes stilo's airbag fault only to mash the connecter togethor incorrectly and whack a tierap round it and surprise surprise it stopped working (fixed it myself after that).

any help please, love the car but electrics really do suck eggs.

Paul

Brake light fix is in the stickys above

Oil pressure warning isn't to so much to do with oil level, it's errr .....oil pressure and shouldn't be ignored. Might be bad contact at oil pressure switch or bad switch itself or it might be ... low oil pressure. Either way, don't leave it, check it out, need to find out which. There'll probably be a fault code stored if it's happening that often but it may just say oil pressure.
I'd check the oil pressure switch connection and either physiclaly get the oil pressure reading checked with a gauge or maybe change the oil pressure switch

Bad idle? Clean the inlet valve, reset ECU by disconnecting the battery or you may need the ECU/ throttle body update

Easy to stall? Shouldn't be, but a limp tickover won't help.

Mine reverses out of an uphill driveway each morning without gas easily

search for and read the thread: " oil pump buggered how much ".

Theres a bit of info there about oil pressure issues which are turning out to be costing me around £2000 to repair.

I had the same probs as you with low oil pressure but ignored them to a point. Is your engine knocking or tapping at all?

I was doing the same as you at first by topping up the oil. Then done an oil change, and thats when my crank bearings gave way

I would get it checked by fiat straight away, then get a second opinion from a good independent garage. (y)

Paul

I had my quote of check engine lights with my VWs VR6s, constantly taken them to VW garages until I discover that it was always MAF related, since then I clean the MAFs of my cars every 4 months and no more check engine lights. ;)

There is Decks !! there's one on the 2.4 and JTD and both are of bad design and stifle the performance of both cars :)

How's your air filter ... a new one can make a big difference to your idling, and running in general, and for what it will cost, it could be a simple cure.

Sorry to tell you but there IS a MAF on the Stilo.

Take a look of the actual MAF for Abarth:

Is that an actual workshop manual for the stilo you are showing us Mate as there was one produced by fiat 01/early 02 I have been in touch with my dealer and he said yes it does exist so I'm biting the bullet [the price] and ordering one as I hate working blind on a car its nice to know all those little specs and strip down procedures when doing jobs on any car not just the stilo (y)

Follow the link for my post on cold air intake and there you will find a link to download the complete instructions and pics. ;)

There's no MAF sensor on a 1.6 Stilo which is what the questioner has, covering every variant would take ages. If you keep answers relevant to the question then it saves confusions:)

Thanks for the info everyone, I took the brake light switch out yesterday and it is as new as you like, Opened the two halfs up and the springs inside where a bit limp (would explain them not allways coming on), so replaced them with springs out of spring kit at work, there are 2 in total one in the main body and one in the stork. Also the stork is adjustable inside the main body and it was all the way in, this is so when you instal it in place and let go of the brake it sets its resting point by click up a few notches. mine was all the way up, i suppose i must have pulled up on the brake at some point and adjusted itself so it's riding on the 'nearly on' limit (explains why people flash me on motorway my lights must have been flickering on).

Anyway 200 pushes later and 200 lights off the brake lights so happy with that.

I'll check the oil pressure sensor connections tomorrow, and see if it stops the problem. As well as the air filter and everything else.

thanks again

Paul

Forgot to add, no the car sounds sweet as a nut, no unusual noises, i even fed it some nice BP Ultimate today just to treat it, and it is purrrring away nicely, been 2 days now without it coming on???. It never comes on whilst driving, only when coming round my corner to my house a bit rapid.
