Now then... I was changing Gerrard's timing belt this weekend, since the beast has used the same one for 70,000 miles and that's near enough... and it was all going reasonably well, c/o a cam-shaft locking tool I bought off t'internet.

But I never really got on with the Fiat spring-loaded tensioner.. and this one was being particularly uncooperative, as they do. I thought it was all tight and I took the locks off so I could spin the beast round a couple of times by hand.. and I *thought* I saw some slackness and a twitch of movement that was not in the manual..

Anyhow, I (re ) tightened everything being careful to keep everything steady and it all *seemed* okay.

However, on starting the beast, it sounded like I'd left one of my spanners inside the crankcase. It was much louder than normal and it was making a ringing/pinking sound... I took it for a tentative drive around the house and it really wasn't where it should be.

I guess the camshaft has slipped a tooth or two... so now I'll need to have another go BUT the timing is now "out" (presumably) so I'll need to reset that. How does I do it?

The camshaft pulley has various lines on it but I didn't notice the first time that these lined up with anything. I also noticed a little "tooth" on the casing (about 1 o'clock) that looks like it's supposed to point to something. Any use?

I ignored the lines on the belt, since the beast was properly locked up until I took the locks off.. but one thread on here suggests that the lines on the belt might be useful (lining up with the crank marks and a mark on the cam pulley)... On the other hand, lines are notoriously unreliable... and as above, I didn't notice any prominent marks on the camshaft pulley when the beast was at TDC that seemed to align with anything (although since it was locked, I didn't really look for any). Anyhow there must be a way to get TDC manually without using belt marks..?

Ehthenkyo.
