lift clip on the hose, and pull back about 5mm, lift the bleed cap, and pump the pedal.....

Shouldn't need to pump the pedal.

Leave the pedal up and fluid should come out of the nipple under gravity. However I usually lightly pressurise the reservoir with a bicycle pump.

ok all good...I tried the valve in the reservoir cap. That didn't work too well, so got a vacuum pump and managed to draw the fluid through.
All working again. Thanks for the information from everyone. Could have all been avoided if there was a decent workshop manual available. For everyone's information, I bought a download "Workshop Manual" from ebay, and it's rubbish.
