So... I'm driving along in Gerrard.... (2004 JTD 8v @ 115bhp)
I notice the beast has become reluctant to accelerate past 3000rpm to overtake.. and the EML comes on.
The car otherwise runs okay... just that ^^ loss of urge above 3000rpm.
Is this simply a MAF fault?

i'd say EGR unless your engine management light is accompanied by a MAF error? 3000rpm loss of power is typical of a blocked egr.
I'm new to the Dark Side... so please bear with me..
The EML is permanently on and the car idles perfectly. It drives "not bad". Of course it has just 115 old donkeys in there.. but it still feels like it's just missing some urge.
In the lower gears things are fine .. it'll accelerate over 3000rpm.. but at higher speed it struggles a bit. I'm revving it occasionally, under a light load, to 3500 rpm when I can to help flush out any soot.. and it seems to be improving..(?) but the EML stays on.
Exhaust is clean - no excess smoke or soot. Almost petrol-like actually.
Do EGRs "self-clean" (for instance if I fed the beast some Ethyl-Hexyl Nitrate ) or is the easiest (!?) if not the quickest solution just to clean/replace the EGR valve?
If I clean/replace the EGR (and it's the cause of the EML), will the EML go out all by itself or do I need to have an error code cleared once it's in the ECU memory?

I think you will find that an EGR malfunction causes loss of power below
2500/3000 rpm and a good deal of black smoke. So perhaps your efforts should be directed elsewhere!
Hmm.. so it's MAF more than EGR...? I'm confused now...
On the other hand, last night I was driving along and the beast was feeling a little better and then I noticed the EML had gone out.. so I dunno. Looks like it's fixed itself.
I'm hoping that whatever it was was flushed, dissolved or burnt away by the beast getting some spirited use... not thrashing, but some heat and load going through it seems to have helped. I'll add some Ethyl-Hexyl Nitrate to the tank... to help burn better/hotter/cleaner too... but so far, nice one Gerrard!

Whatever it is/was.. has come back. EML is on and the beast is reluctant to venture north of 3000rpm. I cleaned out the EGR not too long ago - it wasn't all that bad.. so next test will be unplugging the MAF to see what that does.
