Hi Guys!

Just about to leave work, started it up, moved it 500 yards and then a strange knocking started, as if the car was running without oil. Checked dipstick, not lost anything.
Are far as i can work out the car still has drive and will move. Ive turned it off and unplugged it, worried that it might be the cam belt and the knocking is the valves.

Are these normal symptoms of the cam belt letting go? I can't see anything to suggest the belt has gone, but I have been expecting something for a while!

Is it best to call out the break down to have a look and tow me home? What else would you guys attempt?

If un sure would call breakdown and get it looked at if you are due cambelt change although if cambelt had gone, then so would the engine and not run , saying that it could of jumped some teeth on the belt or be any number of things such as water pump or bearings on auxillary belt or items related to that or any other part but till you can get some of the covers off or look into area of knock be safe to get a tow home from your breakdown people ..least you get home safe or car to reliable garage to look at safely or yourself at home
cambelt parts are on left side engine block when look at from front also high pressure fuel pump for jtd runs off cambelt as does water pump which not changed can cause problems with causing cambelt breakage but may not be cambelt related until know more of knock..oil fine so hope not big end bearings gone, as said best to have time for better look at cambelt covers come off pretty easy for a look
Even getting any fault codes read without starting engine would be helpful to give idea of any fault, could just be knocking from misfiring injector but need fault code on that and safer if worried on cambelt issue

Thanks for the reply only just got internet access as just moved house!
Right, I'm definitely going to take it to a garage to get it checked.
Can anyone recommend what parts should be changed during the job? Cam-belt, water pump, tensioner, high pressure fuel pump? Anything else?

Any chance someone can recommend a good independent in Loughborough that won't break the bank?!

can only go by what information you have given as still in the unkown as to what is causing the knocking noise from your engine but if all is not too drastic and fixed then you want the cambelt stuff sorted would involve following new parts..would advise on waterpump as this is cambelt driven on the jtd engine there were some failures that led to cambelt breakage caused by waterpump failing..when I did mine I changed my waterpump at same time as you only have to do all the cambelt stuff again if waterpump needed replaceing very soon after doing all the other cambelt work..anyway stuff to replace would be..did mine myself and a useful guide in the guides section as no special tools required just quite a few bits to remove to get at the parts to change..leave it to you if you go for fitting new auxillary belt at same time but did mine at same time as requires removing to get to cambelt area and peace of mind that all new parts fitted aux belt only few pounds on top of all the other expensive parts
Cambelt
Cambelt Tensioner
Pulley for Cambelt
Waterpump
Coolant

If you or whoever does work gets cambelt kit you will get cambelt. tensioner and pulley in the kit and need to get waterpump seperate

The coolant would be drained to replace waterpump..and once all work completed and coolant filled it then needs to have the coolant system bled on my jtd 115 there were 3 points ot bleed , top right of radiator, a metal bar with brass bolt that lies across front of engine above exhaust manifold and final bleed screw to the right rear of engine block just down to right of egr valve..if you do search you will find images to help locate these bleed points on here..be well worth getting this information so you can do you bit in informing the person carring out replacing these parts so they know the coolant system requires bleeding once filled with new coolant...well that be me on that hope the knock is not too serious from the engine and new home is worth all the shifting of furniture
Also rememberd that when replacing waterpump the cam position sensor requires unbolting to give room to remover pump, 2 hex type bolts that held in also with locite stuff when did mine could only undo one but this gave enough movement to replace the waterpump

Hi chaps!

Car is finally in the garage!
They have suggested it is the bottom pulley, so setting me back £95.00 + 4x 86p for the "modified bolts" and then the cam-belt is being changed... raring to get back in the car now!

New disks's and pads ready to fit and the calipers are ready to go off for refurb, not long now!

ARRRRGGGGHHHH

My car is "Too low" for the ramp and the side skirts need to come off to get the car on to change it.

The bottom pulley was changed on the ground so that's solved the knocking noise thank god.

Looks like its going to be a at home cam-belt change then!

Can anyone tell me where to get the cam locking tools or give me an estimate for a garage to take my side skirts off and put back on again?

I think the garage didn't want the job now thinking about it.

I've had several garages deliberately over-quote me and were transparent about not wanting the job as it was difficult!

Looking at the guide it doesn't look impossible

Parr Automotive, Riverside End, Market Harborough will do the job. Can't remember how much I was charged but it wasn't excessive otherwise I would not have had it done there.
