Hello

Just a question really and seeking a bit of advice. I have a rattle that sounds like its coming from the passenger side dash. However i asked Fiat to have a look a while ago now and they said it was the exhaust mount seal. Anyway whatever they did it cured it but only for a couple of days. Also when i had my new engine fitted it quietened it down but again, only for a couple of days. The rattle is present everytime car is started (apart from summer if its really warm), on idle and crawling in traffic and it fades when engine gets warmed up. Now i'm ruling out the engine mount because that hasn't been touched. My question is, is there an exhaust mount or something that can cause a rattling which is affected by heat under the car passenger side or right at the back of engine? When it came back and i questioned Fiat they didn't sound sure what they did!
Thanks

Phil

Hi Phil, I only say this as from my experience with my car. Check your battery cover. The vibration from it changes as the engine warms and resonance changes

Underneath your car are some aluminium heat shields to reflect heat from the exhaust . It could be that one of these is distorted just enough to touch the exhaust when hot . Suggest you put car on lift and check all these clearances. Will take minutes to do - hardest part is to find a ramp ! go to your friemdly tyre shop and bribe one of the lads with the price of a pint.

Thanks for your reply, that does sound likely. Is there anything else that has a rubbery part like the engine mount for example, that can harden or wear away?

Thanks

Right i've had the rattle looked at and the bloke said he can't see where its coming from without having to strip things. We got talking about the engine mount which i may take a gamble and get it changed. I've got all the symptoms i think however, a couple of questions:
1. If it is the engine mount would it be audible from outside the car?
2. Its not the metallic noise as described on here, its more of a 'plasticy' sound.

Fiat said the exhaust mount so i am now very confused. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Anyone?

Is it worth just buying an engine mount and see if that cures it? I've had a look at the guide on how to change the mount and one of the symptoms is a metallic sound. The thing is mine sounds more plasticy

I cured my rattle.......it sounded like it was behind the dash too. Open the door; there is a bolt about dash height inside the door shut, it is one of the bolts which holds the wing on. Mine was a bit loose so was vibrating, nip it up and any more you find loose, tell us if it cures your rattle too.

I've checked that bolt and it is tight. Thanks for the help. The cause of my rattle is definetly in the engine area or directly underneath, but i just don't know where!

I haven't spent much time under my Stilo yet, but is there a heat shield or two in the engine bay and around the exhaust? could be any one of those.

It must be. Fiat did fix it but it came back after 2 days and when i had my new engine fitted it quietened down. Fiat said it was an exhaust mount but they didn't go into details. I went back to get more info from them but they can't access the details on their system as it new blah blah.

This car keeps developing faults left, right and centre its getting difficult to keep on top of things. I've got a juddering and now knocking to add to the list!

alrighty. see what the tyre place say, heat shields and exhaust mounts are easy to fix-but they need to be checking for breakages in the brackets etc, which might then explain the recurrences.

A heat shield can appear and feel quite tight, but still vibrate under pressure, and a heat shield will almost always sound like a rattle, due to the speed of the vibration.

the knocking sound you have could well be the drop link-have you checked them? maybe even the tie-rod end but its hard to check yourself when the car is on the ground unless they look obviously worn.

I would love to take a look with you-I'm no mechanic, but not bad with a spanner when I put my mind to it. if the tyre place doesn't help, then maybe ill come over and take a look with you? Might be able to find solutions to your many problems-be nice for you to get them fixed once and for all, things like this can drag on and put you off your car forever!

Thanks for the offer Clivvy, thats very nice of you. My mechanic who lives down the road from me does alot of work for me but hes very busy at the moment. I've been to see his mate for some work. However with regards to the judder i'm booked in next Monday for the MAF testing and replacing if necessary. Then i'll take it from there. This noise from under the car is very infrequent at the moment so i may let it develop. Where are you located mate? Also do you have axel stands or ramps as i haven't :) I may actually call upon your services mate, i'll let you know what happens.
