hi all my wee stilo has problems driving home today it cut out,
tried for ages to start it it just wouldnt fire after ten mins of trying it did and drove 500 yards and cut out again did not start after that, ended up with a flat battery when i got towed home robbed the wifes week old battery from her car no joy then it fired again took it for a short but swift drive drove grand till i hit a bump on my drive way cut out again and heard when i opened the bonnet a red realy making a crackling noise,
took it out and when i put it back in car started fine. sitting at my tea happy but puzzled wondering what could be wrong the horn on thr car started to blow on its own jumped in to move the car to the shead horn stopped as soon as i took the keys out it started to blow again
disconnected the battery to be safe.
any body any ideas on whats gone wrong

what he said, but id also be looking at the CKP sensor to maybe explain the cutting out. A good test is, when the car is cold, does it start and run ok, then begin to cut out when warm? Also check the connection-could be wet.

Cheers guys now where or what is a d 4 plug and this sensor ,
there was moisture on the fuse box last night but dry this morning when I took another look before I headed off to catch a bus to work
I popped the battery lead on again and horn still sounding.

ah in that case James said, could very well be your fuses, even though it looks dry, your fuse box is still probably moist. Id be getting some moisture repellant in there and give it a good dry.

look here for the D4 guide https://www.fiatforum.com/stilo-guides/99828-d4-connector.html

D4 is under the fusebox and the crank sensor is right in front of the crank pulley.

But I'd ignore them for the moment - if your horn is going off as soon as the battery is connected then that points to a stuck relay. The horn has a relay in the engine bay fusebox, can't remember which one it is but it's one of the black ones - just pull each one in turn until the horn goes off. I had a similar problem last year and that's what I done

Ok guys and girls how easy to change the crankshaft sensor on a stilo 1.9 jtd , I ask as ihave just ordered one and to be totally honest I'm a real beginer at car repairs. But learning real fast , I have changed the engine fusebox as I hada problem with water in it , but when the engine is running at normal running temp she cuts out and won't restart until cooled down , so after reading some posts I think the sensor is the problem . How easy on a 1 to 10 with 1 being mega easy ........ thanks in advance ...Suzi

Changign the CKP will be as easy as access to it. I have never done a Stilo one, but as it will be position in front of the crankshaft, it should be fairly accessible. I did the one on my 4x4, and it was down in between the belts, and is easy, should be one bolt on the Stilo i think.

Jack the car up on Axel stands, make it safe, get alight, and you should see it at the front or rear, but someone on here will confirm its position shortly. i would try do it yourself if you are confident, as a garage might charge you a fair bit....

on my 1.2 stilo the sensor is at front and easily undone from top no hassle 1 min to undo the wire runs up behing the cam belt cover so my be a few bolts to undo there diesel may be different paul

ok a big thanks to james clivvy and alex for the help moist plates in my fuse box the guide was brilliant all i need now is the managment light reset and find a cover for the battery.

The JTD crankshaft sensor is at the back of the engine above the starter motor. You will need the car jacked up and on axle stands to crawl under it. Once you're under the car, it's still not the easiest thing to get to and the plastic bracket that holds the wiring connector to the back of the engine can be difficult to access.

if its sorted, the EML MIGHT reset itself after a few miles of driving, otherwise will need hooking up...
