the 1.2 has the same gear lever as the 1.6 , you can cut the thinner part of it (see pictures in mentioned post) and cut away a part of the plastic tube for the reverse lock mechanism and glue the two parts together.
You will need to enlarge the hole in the gear knob (or fit another one) and you might consider fitting an adapted Abarth console like i did.

step 2. remove the plastic top of the original knob and cut through the rubber with a sharp knife or cutters, then put grips aruond the plastic and wiggle the knob free (sounds kinky eh?)

step 3. remove reverse lift part of plastic and cover hole with cardboard to stop the swarf from cutting going into the gearchange mechanism.

step 4. cut the lever to your required length(unless you are very brave or very stupid please don't use an angle grinder as seats burn.) i used a jigsaw but a hacksaw will do the job.

final step. fit the new lever of your choice and put grease into the gearchange mech for a smoother shift, slip the gear gaiter back over and attach in place by gently pushing it into the clips.

and finally. go into your kitchen and get a shot of brandy, pour into glass and ad coke and ice (slice of lime optional.) take drink outside to car and toast yourself to a job well done.

total job time for me was 15 mins, 20 if you use a hacksaw.

thank you. Tim.:slayer:

hi yampug. i just really like how sporty the gearchange feels now, my old gearknob was also showing it's age and i needed a change. some people will like the mod and some won't. my stereo has a remote control so i don't lean on the lever to change it anyway. it does feel better with the armrest down to now.

hi sharpy. gearchange feels loads better infact i'm thinking of taking some more off the lever, takes a little getting used to 5th with no reverse lever but if it gets on my wick i will make a slide bar up to make sure 5th hits everytime and post a thread on how to do it. but so far really easy to live with and much sportier feel.

do a proper write up and stick it in the guides i might be into this one and i have a spare gear stick If it all goes wrong... Is it actually properly short shift or just stubby gearstick?
You didnt mention this last night

I'm going to do this while my centre console's removed :D From the looks of this I should order a new gearknob from Fiat, also seen some nice black leather/red stitch gear/handbrake gaiters on ebay also. Only thing I'll do differently though is follow yellowstilos advice and cut a similar length off the plastic lift reverse mechanism and glue it together so as I still have use of the plastic stoppy bit! :)
