Technical Airbag Failure Warning Light

Also ditto on my 1.6 they replaced the occupant sensor and on a seperate occasion the wiring loom - eventually it stayed fixed...

i have had mine a month now it is a 53 reg (jan 2004) and it has happened twice I rung my dealer up (derby) and he said it could be a bigger job or a peice of **** job
It was in the end a wiring loom underneath the drivers seat (load sensor) and if you nunged it, it would go on or off but would correct it if it was on

Hope this helps people

Firstly, airbags are a 'fail safe' system, which means if they fail, they will be deactivated and hence can't operate.

I've had this problem a couple of times, first time a fiddle under the seat sorted, but second time the dealer need to clear the fault.

is it a major job and has it returned since u have had it done

No not at all, and no it hasn't returned, but it can't be garanteed you will be as lucky.

The recurring faults are half the fun with these cars :D

I had the same problem when I first got my car.

There is a sensor in the passenger seat to detect when someone is sat in it to save on repair costs in an accident if you are carrying no passengers.

Initially, they said that the sensitivity was to high, so they adjusted it. The problem came back soon after so they replaced it for me. The problems not been back since.

Stilo 1.6 dynamic

It doesn't just detect if a passenger is there, it deploys the airbag at different speeds depending on how heavy they are!

Re: Airbag Warning Light

To cure the problem, the seat sensor needs changing. This is a known problem to fiat. They told you they "TWEEKED" the sensor nonsense they cant do this, only cure is to replace it.Run your hand over the seat you will feel the sensor it will be rough in places.

Re: Airbag Warning Light

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the orange connector for the passenger seat sensor (completely disconnect) easy to check as it pulls out on its housing from under seat. I reconnected the connector and then used a cable tie to keep connector from coming unconnected - touch wood no more probs. I did read somewhere (I think on this site) that there is a problem with the connectors (cheap or something) which means they do come disconnected quite easily, usually the passenger side as that seat is moved more frequently. However Fiat are unable to issue a mod. due legal implications if they were to modify the wiring loom for safety devices such as air bags. ie: legal liabilty should there mod. not work in the event of an accident.

Re: Airbag Warning Light

Its more than likely the connector under the seat all the time, i know loads of people that have taken there cars back to dealerships when they've had problems like that (and thats for all makes of cars) Im sure it gets knocked when you move your seat, which in the case of a 3 door is quite often if people get in and out of the back

Re: Airbag Warning Light

it could be the passenger seat sensor, built into the seat base, which needs replacing,or the multiplugs under the seat-try noting the wiring colours in the multiplugs before strippng out the female connectors and squeezing them to make a tighter connection and replace them back in the multiplug and cable tying them to the plastic mount to stop any undue strain on them .ok gl.-do this proceedure with the ignition off!p.s.you may have to take to fiat dealer for them to turn off the warning light if it is on

I have a 3 door Stilo Active and even I am having the same problems. I noticed that this happens when there is some-one sitting on the rear seat on the left hand side of the car. Taken the car to the dealer twice already. Problem was fixed but now I have to take it again since yesterday the light came on again when I had a passenger seated in the back seat.
Had same prob but mine was on the drivers side its when i move the front seat for the passenger to get in it can knock the wiring loom under the seat

I have a 3dr fiat stilo active sound and recently the airbag warning light is starting to appear also with the message Aibag Failure Stop enigne at first this was intermittent but i have noticed it appears when a passenger is sitting on the passenger seat then after about 5 min into the journey it would disappear the warning now in the last few days the warning is happen constantly even when there is no passenger is there a known problem with airbag sensors on the passener Seat

We had this lot when our car was new and every time the sensor had to be replaced, We eventually narrowed it down to two things, these sensors are electronic because they are supposed to sense the mass of the person in the seat and calculate wether the airbag should be deployed full or half.
They can be damaged by placing an active mobile phone on the seat, or strangly enough if you use a certain type of aerosol in the car, my wifes armani perfume drives it nuts.

Re: Airbag Warning Light

Its just a long copper strip shaped into the padding with about 3 pressure sensors,no electronics & certainley cant be adjusted in anyway! The switches simply break & whole seat base (foam) has to be renewed.

Re: Airbag Warning flashing

I had this prob after I was moving the seats forward to put stuff in the back. Apparantly there is a sensor in the front seats and the cables can come loose. It was just plugged back in by the dealership.

Re: Airbag Warning flashing

same problem here, the conector under the passenger seat (the white one), after taking to dealer about three times i just cut out the connector and replaced it with an elecrical connector block. no problems since.

Re: Airbag Warning flashing

Our Stilo Active has come up with an airbag warning.
This was fixed by the local dealer, by fitting a new connector.

That was a couple of weeks go, now the warning has reappeared.

Apparently there are a number of connectors that may cause a problem.

Wonder how much they will charge to 'fix' it this time round?

Should this sort of problem be covered by 3rd year warranty?

Re: Airbag Warning flashing

Soldering! cutting airbag wiring! some of you are risking your & other passengers lives by doing this.NO manufacturer endorses this kind of practise & would insist on a new loom being fitted if this was ever done at a dealership.
Go back to dealer, explain this fault keeps re-occuring and a discount would be a kind gesture & would keep you using the dealership. After all £30-40 to fix airbag system....you'd probably spend more on a saturday night out!
Wiring/connectors not covered by 3rd year warranty.

Re: Airbag Warning flashing

Isn't a life saving piece of safety equipment like an airbag that is unreliable through poor quality contacts and connectors comprising driver and passenger safety more?

Customers paying for "repairs" to unreliable safety systems that have not been properly quality tested just shouldn't be happening. They aren't "repairs" but modifications to substandard systems that weren't properly tested in the first place. Bravos suffered from spurious air bag warnings 8 years ago, it shouldn't still be happening now.

Unreliable life saving safety systems are the worst. It's better not to have it fitted at all than to not know whether it's going to work when needed.

Agree, but in the owners manual it states to go to dealer straight away if light comes on & its your responsibility to do that. Most Alfa owners I know stop car & get AA to tow it in & quite rightly so as what if they had a accident on way to dealers???

All airbag repairs must be carried out by DET's & approved technicians (not just a mechanic) to cut down on repeat repairs....check this has been the case if you take yours to be repaired.

Re: Airbag Warning flashing

I totally agree, airbag systems should never have any soldering work done on them. Fiat have sent out a service news to all dealers stating that the ONLY people to work on airbags are Dealer Expert Technicians. Soldering wiring under seats is highly dangerous and should not be carried out.

Re: Airbag Warning flashing

Yes I agree too. If something's up with the airbag system then get it fixed by someone qualified to repair it.

My point was just why is the air bag system so unreliable when it's supposed to be life saving equipment. Bravos are infamous for airbag lights (only they lock on and can only be reset by the dealer) and now we we see Stilos have more faults than should be happening. Time moves on but technology apparently has not.

It's not just Fiats, a huge range of car manufacturers suffer from eroneous air bag warning lights so what is it that causes it? Is it the low voltages and therefore problems with the slightest increase in resisitance? Are the electrical connectors just not a capable of reliably carrying the low voltages?
