Just had a new gear box and clutch fitted to my 62 plate pinto, drive home everything was fine then was reversing on the drive and the engine management light come on and on the dash a warning of check engine was displayed. Took it back to the garage where I had the new gear box fitted and they said the error code was for a pre heated residence circuit, they checked the work they had done cleared the code and I drove home once again stuck it into reverse and the engine management light is on again. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Not sure you've got quite the right wording there. A residence is where someone lives. Perhaps resistance is what we're looking at.

The phrase points me towards the heater part of one of the lambda sensors, but its timing is off. The lambda sensor needs to be hot to operate efficiently. It has a heating element to achieve this, and once hot, it stays hot, because of the hot exhaust. So the heating element is only active at startup and for a short time afterwards. I would expect the warning to appear very soon after startup.

If you drive and just park, without reversing, does the light stay out? If so, that suggests an engine mounting issue where the engine moves when reversing, and stretches a wiring connection.

Look underneath, to the rear of the engine, there should be a short 'dog bone' mounting. This controls the engine movement. Have they left it off, or is it worn out?
Now from above, with the engine cold, locate the lambda sensors in the exhaust, and check the wiring is secure, but free to move when the engine moves.

If that lot fails to find the issue, we need the code read again, and the actual code, not the description from whatever diagnostic tool they are using.

Is it petrol or diesel engine?

Damm auto correct yes that's what I meant, the engine management light is permanently on now when the car starts it takes a couple of seconds before the warning appears on the dash, it was just weird after having the fault cleared it happened again whilst putting the car in reverse.

I'm wondering what to do really as the error was not there before the gearbox and clutch were fitted but they are now there, would a new gearbox and clutch fitted affect the lambda sensor?

Following on from Bill's comment, can you remember if the light came one when you put the gearbox into reverse or when you acrually starete to move backwards?
If it came on immediately you put it into reverse it could be a wiring issue. It's a long shot but they maight have connected the reversing light switch to a sensor circuit so it shorted the sensor line when in reverse.
Check to see if your reversing light still works.

It came on when the car was moving and then has stayed on since

Most likely the heater circuit of the first lambda sensor. Although it could be the second one. The fault code should tell which it is, stated as sensor 1 or sensor 2.

But, don't assume, check all the advice as above first.
