Does it only do it for a few mins when you first drive the car from cold? If so mine does the same i thinks is a common thing

Mine is last of the mk2 i know a few people that have owned puntos and its abit juddery for a few mins then it sorts it self out.

Mine also has been serviced
New clutch and gear box oil
New headgasket
New ht leads and still does it for around 5mins.

Blown head gasket? Well my does mine do it after a head gasket replacement hmm

Hmmm, I was just going to post a thread about this!

Just acquired a 2002 / 52 plate 1.2 16v Sporting which is just the same. Very grumpy when cold, but seems fine when warm / hot! Exacerbated as I live at the bottom of a hill and when trying to be mechanically sympathetic with a cold engine this just seems to make things worse!

If they all do it then great, I guess. The garage I acquired it from were adamant it has a healthy HG and cooling system in general. It also has had a service and timing belt change.

Doesn't always follow (and generally it'll only do it -- initially -- when cold). But if you've any doubt, do a compression test. Testers are cheap as chips on eBay at the moment.

But I've got to ask -- is the timing right and was the head skimmed?

Yes the timing is right and the head was skimmed all professional services from a garage

My sporting used to do the same,
check for air locks,

they are a mare to bleed..so it can take a while to get all the air out,

Hi OH - air locks in the cooling system or induction system?

There was an airlock in the cooling system when I collected the car from the day before when the water pump had been changed as part of the timing belt change.

'It can take a while to get all the air out.it may take several bleeds to get it right.so prepare to waste abit of coolant.

*check all the Jubilee clips are good & tight..also check for weeps from the thermostat housing.

You havent bought my old punto have you?(EA52KAO)
id just changed timing belt/waterpump on it before it got sold to a dealer.

Hi

No, the plate = MK52 LUT - which my strange brain has reconfigured to = MK2 5LUT! :)

I'm hoping the engine's fine but I will do a general fluid change (gearbox, brakes) and have it up on a friends' ramp before too long to have decent check underneath before winter. He's a mechanic too which is handy! The temp doesn't move much above the first quarter mark which kind of suggests some kind of coolant issue, unless the gauges in these cars are temperamental?

Back on topic (sorry OP) the engine was grumpy when cold again tonight but when revved and warm it really goes! :-D

Yep, from Manchester.

Yes, I have been thinking thermostat too. Is it that 'square' bit under the 'distributer cap'?
