Hi Guys,

I have a punto Mk 2 sporting I bought not too long ago. In the last 2 days I've started getting some noises and stuff I've not encountered before.

When you pull away (not all the time), as you change gear and start accelerating through the revs, the car sometimes makes an audible clunk type noise. It jerks slightly when it does this (in a way not too dissimilar to the way a car kangaroos when you learn to drive - but only the one jump though).
When it jumps I'm pretty sure it mildly affects the steering and makes the car less responsive (I'm taking the motorbike to work in the am)

Driving smoothly and without harsh acceleration seems to make it happen less although it does happen occasionally still. Lastly when you change gear I think I hear a bit of a noise but this could be my imagination as I'm listening for things going tits up now.

Just looking for ideas before I start rooting around inside the engine bay too much in case this is a known fault. I've had a look at the engine mountings and they are still there although the engine does seem to move around a bit when you rev it up? No idea how much they're supposed to move....

Any help would be hugely appreciated - I wait in hope!

Mike:)

righto gents, i'll get onto that (or rather under that) tomorrow night after work. You reckon that the mounting being loose would cause this by letting everything move around too much?
Also what am I looking for - worn rubbers and loose stuff I'm guessing?

Thanks for the help

sweet as gents! I shall report back on the state of my used rubbers tomorrow night!

just get a rag and grab hold of sump

obviously whilst engine is cold.

push/pull by sump and if engine rocks dogbone will more than likely be fubard,

this is how icheck them anyway,

changed mine not long back new mount makes abig improvement.

well you gents came through and it does look like the bottom mount. Had at it earlier on and managed to get the engine/dogbone bolt out but f*ck me if i could get the dogbone/chassis bolt to free up.
Had large ratchet/socket on it, then large ratchet/socket + foot, then spanner in a length of bar and finally the spanner/persuader combo, all in vain.
Gave it up for this evening having sprayed enough WD40 onto it that hopefully it'll float out overnight. Failing that a longer breaker bar (didn't have access to this tonight) and a visit to Halfrauds for a new 18mm impact socket will see it free tomorrow night.

Anyone got any wise words and advice (and please to god don't tell me its got a reverse thread...)
:bang:

Hi. Tbh. for what it wouid cost pop into a local backstreet garage when its quiet and ask them to loosen the bolt they will get it up in the air and get windy gun on it,

id sooner hand alocal garage a tenner than do one of these again when idid mine it was a right Bast&rd to undue,

ive never had problems getting them off on diesels.

ithink mine was original mount from new hence why it didnt want to come out easy.

once you get this bolt out get plenty of copper grease on it

someone on here recenty snapped the bolt getting one out so mind hows ya goes.

loosen it then tighten it bit by bit ..to clean the threads on the bolt.

dont try to take bolt out in one go take your time

mmm, wish I'd had this sage advice earlier before whaling the **** out of it as I'm relalitively sure mines never been moved either. Will take our time and hopefully report back with good news tomorrow night.
Worst case scenario I was thinking to cut the old mount off leaving the alu cylinder the bolt goes through and get a blowtorch on it. :worship:

Quick, quick, quick, say congratumulations to me!

My mate and myself having spent about 2 hrs under the car flexing the bolt back and forwards finally got the b@stard out! Fiat weren't taking any chances with that were they - it's about a foot and a half long!

All sorted now though - no more clunking and jolting and hopefully no more problems for a while.

All I have to is some welding, cleaning, undersealing and then put a cutch in the other car (does this never end?)

Many thanks to all for the advice, tips and providing hope that it wouldn't shear off.

Mike

Good result mate,

did you copper grease the bolt ? just incase you needs to replace it at alater date

ive heard these 16valves can eat the lowermount's.
mines alright upto now..ijust dont give it the beans on take off :D

yeah i copperslipped it to within an inch of its life just in case. Took the car out and gave it some welly to see if its all ok and and it seemed fine.
Went shopping afterwards and it seemed to do the jerk/clunk thing once on the way back so I'm hoping it just did that one for old times sake...

Needless to say I'll be treating it gently just in case for the next few days and listening out for any unexpected jumps/clunks/clatters/noises of things falling off...:p

if you get any rattles under bonnet.
check airbox is bolted down properly..

ibinned the original bolts and put my own in .

these sportings and normaly quiet..alot quieter than 8valvers anyway.

its normally pretty quiet and apart from that one case on the way back it seemed fine. It may have been my imagination tbh - you know what its like, you get a problem and everything you hear for a while after sounds like something bad.:D

Might seem a silly question - but I am going to get mine looked at by my brother in law whos a mechanic, but just for info - when removing the bolt, I assume a new one is needed...

Whats the best place to get one from? I prefer to give him all the info/tools required so he can just get on and do it lol!
