I've been reading sites all over the web this morning, and they all seem to disagree with each other with reference to putting vegoil (I'm not talking about biodiesel) in your car.

I'm not interested in filling the tank purely on vegoil, I'm just wondering if it is possible to top up a tankful with a few litres (maybe 5 or so) of vegoil straight from the supermarket and not have any detrimental effect on the engine.

From what I can tell it shouldnt cause any major problems, apart from the fuel filter wearing out slightly quicker. However, people who have had this problem have been using a 50/50 or more ratio, which I'm not really interested in doing.

Has anyone ever tried it?

Of course this is all just in a theoretical context.......

I know someone has ran his 405 hdi on 25% mix for years. His previous pugs he ran on pure oil, he has never had any problems, ran one for 100k on veg oil until it got wrote off, he regulary tows caravans also.

Never been able to make the leap to using it in mine though. Although he swears his runs better and cleaner on oil.

Cold starting can be a problem on high veg mixes as the cooking oil freezes quicker than mineral diesel.

I would be interested if anyone else has any experience in this also.

BTW he uses rape oil.

This is interesting i have just looked in asda and 3 litres of veg oil is £1.60 so 4.5litres would be about £2.40 thats got to be about half the cost of diesel.I am tempted too to go out and buy 6 litres and stick it in

Thats what I was thinking. That makes a litre of veg oil about 53p, as opposed to the 87p I have just paid for diesel. I was thinking of around 1 gallon to every tankful, and although the cost savings may not seem much, I do around 20k miles per year, so it will make a difference. Not to mention doing my bit for global warming etc etc;)

Of course in these rough calculations I have not included the fuel duty which we should remember would be due in such circumstances........cough(y)

sadly I believe you have to pay duty if you use veg oil in your car as fuel

Said friend was stopped for a road side fuel check when he was running on pure veg oil. Had a joke with them, as they were dipping the fuel, he said "Make sure you put any back you take out, theres not much in there" The excise guy laughed and said "Your right, theres not much DIESEL in there". He knew he was running veg oil, but was not bothered in the least, only interested in red diesel. Mate seems to think, that because you are filling the car yourself (non commercially) and paying vat on the oil, they cannot touch you, they just want you to think they can. I once hit the search engines to try and find out how you would report the tax on veg oil, could not find it anywhere, that would support this. Anyway, if you reported the tax on a gallon a month, how would they know if you used one or ten gallons?

no they can as VAT is at max 17.5%,fuel duty is way higher so oyu are underpaying.
however you are right they are more interested in red diesel fraud

The trouble I have been having in researching this subject is that most of the sites giving information tell you not to do it as it may damage the engine etc, but then try and sell you their conversion kit or something.

I just want some unbiased information which is proving quite difficult.

From what I have gathered, there is issues with using vegoil in winter, and probably isnt a good idea, so for the relatively small gain I will get from using it, it may not be worth the comparative high risks involved such as getting my collar felt, damaging the engine, invalidating the warranty etc etc.(n)

Warranty would be invalidated on any component that comes into contact with the veg oil, or exhaust gases caused by it.
Not worth any finacial gains me thinks.

Basically don't risk your M-Jet..

Buy a JTD or even better an old TD with a Bosch fuel pump. TD Tipo's LOVE straight veggie oil, duty is chargable @ 40odd pence per litre. You have to inform Customs and Excile per month how much you use and pay them the duty due.

well my friend has a mulitjet, and he puts 75% veg oil and 25%white sperits, provideing you change your fuel filter every 6mouths you should get away with it without any problems. but it makes you feel hugery if you are following behind it,,,,, hummmmmmmm chips.:)

Indeed they do. They also seem to have the ability to intercept emails! People have had C+E turn up at the door armed with emails they've sent to friends regarding the veggie oil.

Can't imagine they have the manpower to check that figures you give are 100% accurate. Providing you are paying them a decent amount, then they will probably be happy.

You're not supposed to use white spirits as its not approved as a fuel additive.

Highest council tax in the UK here in Hartlepool :(

What on earth we get for it I don't know...

Anyway you have to register as a fuel producer for tax reasons (probably as their computers don't have the option for 'pioneering bio diesel fuel consumer'
