Hi,
My 02 Multipla 1.9 JTD cambelt recently failed at 54000 miles (yes, regularly serviced & at the correct intervals) - is this a known common problem?
Are Fiat sympathetic to compensation pleas for this kind of failure?

Thxs

Greycar:

OK lets get things clear, Fiat are not responsible for the cam belt breaking.
The 36k service includes a cam belt check, if the cam belt was ok at this time, then in the next 18000 miles it may have been contaminated with oil etc.
If the vehicle has been serviced on time by a Fiat dealer then Fiat Customer services should be able to help.
I can honestly say that I have not seen a jtd engine in a Fiat break its cambelt unless contaminated.

My 2001 1.9 jtd cambelt went yesterday! It has done 61,000miles and has always been serviced, although not by the agent! Wonder if Fiat UK would be bothered? The main dealer in Sheffield has not come across one going before! Anyone any ideas? Dave Pullin

So Fiat are not responsible for their poor design, (i.e. if oil contamination to blame, bad seal design...) - a bit like we accept personal computer software continually crashing?!:bang:

Let's face it guys, it all depends on how the car has been driven. If it has been thrashed or has done allot of stop start driving like a taxi, this will add extra wear to the cam belt. A car that has been driven carefully and its mileage consists mainly of longer journeys will have less cam belt wear than the former resulting in more milage out of your cam belt.
