hi I have just plugged in my obd11 lead to check the pre- heating system because the coil light flashes after start up, if a glow plug was at fault say number 2 would that have an individual code or if the relay was the problem would it say the relay ? or is it luck of the draw and change all 4 plugs and the relay together, thanks

Thanks I was gona get stuck in tomorrow but can't now, driving to Sunderland, have to be next weekend now thanks for the help, does anyone have the resistance readings to test them ? And do they have to come out to test

Pre- heating

This has been discussed a few times.
You don't need them unless you're winter-driving in northern Siberia, or somewhere colder! (y)
Even then it'd probably start with a couple of seconds cranking.

Remember, Diesels are 'compression ignition' Engines, the heat created by the high compression ratio raises the temperature of the air/fuel enough to ignite it.

Mine has been flashing for months now after start-up, still starts immediately no matter how cold it is or however long it's been standing for.

I never wait for the self-check to do it's thing, just go straight to start as soon as the key's in the barrel, i.e. giving the plugs no time to heat up anyway.

Before my last Multi finally died, I was planning to disconnect them just to prove the point, might still do it on the current one . . . :p

Yes I no but on here someone said he's economy went up when the pre-heater system fault was put rite, my car gives a reading of around 32-36 so just thought if I sort the heaters will it cure my economy issue, my old shape car used to give a readout of 46 to 52, so could the heaters affect the economy that bad or is it just a dodgy readout I filled it up as I normally do and on the first quarter tank I got about 214 miles ? Seems strange, I want to check the M A F sensor but can't get it out because of the weird screws holding it. Thanks for the response

Also I counted how long coil light flashes for, 30 seconds so I think 2 heaters are at fault ?

My view is that you don't really need 'em.

My 197k miler did without them for 100k+ miles.

Generally, DI diesels only really need pre-heating in real Arctic conditions. Save money & time by not bothering...

I don't know. I'm having issues with my Multijet. With no heating at all it takes a lot of turning over before it starts. And then it is a bit spluttery for a few seconds. When the engine is at full temperature, then it is not required, I agree. The controller is a bit confused; sometimes it heats, other times it doesn't.

I found the crank and can position sensors to be a pain when the engine was hot my old JTD wouldn't start cam sensor sorted that, cold starting is the crank ? Does it ever cut out when idling ? That was my crank sensor

Would failure of any of these sensors not come up with a fault? Or would that just bee too simple? Only ever got the usual heater controller fault.
Once started, mine seems to drive perfectly after. Just putting on the road properly next Wed - time will tell.

There must be a grey area that doesn't show up, some sensors work or they don't, no in-between, but as I said they do start to break down and no error will show hence not starting when hot ? The sensor error code show when completely kaput.

Watch mind, people on about disconnecting them, sometimes they stay on after start up, to do with the emission system.
Also am I right in saying that now for MOT if there is a warning light on it fails MOT?

It depends on the light ? Abs things like that yes but not the pre heater I don't think, my old multi failed on emissions a few years ago forte brought it to almost zero, good stuff

How do get the picture on your comment to show ? I tried but still not showing

You mean how to attach photos to a post? Click the 'go advanced' button, then the paperclip button. That will let you navigate to the folder on your computer, then upload them to the Forum servers.

Alternatively, you can paste a link to something like Photobucket (that's what I do). The problem with that comes when people have a clearout of the photos in their Photobucket account, forgetting that they've linked the pictures hosted there to a forum thread. That then makes the thread about as much use as a handbrake in a canoe to anyone reading it in 12 months time .

I tried to navigate to pictures on the computer but the upload part failed a couple of times so I gave up
