Panda (Classic) BEX, The Blue Sisley 4x4.

Introduction

After spotting Bex on Ebay a few minuets after the ad was posted i made >>This<< post requesting the car to be saved.

after showing my mum, she said i could have it. rather than it being broken and parts sold off it, with intent to fix it up (gearbox failure being the reason why it was off the road.. however read on for a bit of a twist.) and after repairing it, selling it on to help fund my addiction. (aka the quest to make Talon the perfect panda).

So now i have a wild Bex parked on the driveway.

Bex is a previous Forum car. the original thread can be found >>Here<<.

Sadly, somehow in the last year Bex has had it a little rough!
There's a hole in the sill (not rust but a puncher wound!)
Each lock has a different key, (drivers door lock opens with any key!)
The filler pipe has been damaged by some fuel thief. (thankfully not the plastic pipe, only the rubber seal.)
and there's a dent in the sill (that i can pull out using a tack weld dent puller)

also the wheel arches have started to go that tell tale bronzey orange stain in some parts telling me that rust is trying to set in and kill off that nice new respray it had not long back. think i will have caught it in time though.
sadly the underseal used on the car (if any) after the previous repairs was not very good :( i am not sure what was used but the last 3 years of time it has washed it all off back to bare metal.

the gearbox.. hmm though i have only been able to test this with the engine off, all gears seem to be there. its a bit stiff and has the tell tale sign of a snapped weld on the nut on top of the connecting arm. (loads of play in and out of gears.. fine moving left and right on the box though.) will check oil levels and CV boot conditions tomorrow in daylight.

ill add photos in a bit.. again in daylight. and yes, again ill be doing video logs on the Bex's progress.

least this one seems like easy fixes. just tidying up. nothing structural. the important thing is that the doors are in good condition! yey a panda with no rusty doors!!

here are the photos:

How were those 'repair' sills even attached at the bottom were the skins meet. The inner sill and floor panel parted company a lot longer than a couple of years ago. Was it just filler?

most of it was covered in silicone. there has been previous repairs done to the front of the leaf spring mountings that are very sturdy and look to be a good job.. i think this was done long before the sill repair as it has all been painted.

this panda has seen the welder a lot previously.

the thing is with it, i know i can save it. the thing that is really annoying me the most is how i cant get a pair of sills from anywhere. even ricambio has them out of stock at £80 a piece without shipping!

i have sent some more messages to yet more italian sellers asking if they will ship to the uk, but again to no replies.

the grey panda is in a lot better condition than bex.. for starters all the grey panda needs is the sill plug welding back together. i think the other side sill is in much better condition as i did the worst side first.

Silicon eh. Classy repair. Looking back over old threads I see this sold for £2000 following its 'restoration' Most people, me included occasionally cut corners but that just looks like an attempt to deceive

The truth must have dawned fairly rapidly to the new owner as it didnt spend alot of time on the road. £2000 for that:eek: Must have pretty grotty to drive with so much important structure missing.

Its a horrible feeling to start a project and then find out its much worse than you expected - Been there, bought the T-Shirt and have the blood loss.

As I said on facebook, KA sills will fit but need fettling and a bit of bending. If you cant get Panda sills and you need to repair on a budget then I would recommend them.

Is it past saving? depends how much time and money you want to chuck at it, it also depends on the other rust areas I suppose.

Is braking much of an option, there is nothing much that you cant pull of another fiat, engine is the same as the SCI and CINQ, gearbox is broken ect perhaps rear Axel and leaf spring setup.

If you have the space, put it aside for a bit and come back to it when you are in a better place.

Have you tried fiat them selves?
They can do a dealer search, it's amazing what old gear is lying around in the back of dealerships, my dealer has an OEM uno clutch, a X19 head set and a 80's panda door sat right now lol god knows what else he has, we need to ratch in the barn of magic :D

2x Prolunga batti tacco
...like this and this ?
Tasty shopping list there!

ohh english seller! nice.

Oh yes. it pays to learn a little Italian. like what we call the "sills" the Italians call "Sottoporta" which translated to English means "underdoor"!
item names in italian seem to be just a description of what it does, or describing what it is next to.

theres more i am adding to the list. though that lot is paied for.

next things i wanna get is the original aerial, and just some other odds and ends. mostly just tarting up gear.

just added a new welding mask to the basket. mine stopped auto dimming a while back so ive been using the old style "look and duck" mask. its all well and good but its a pain not having a hand free to get burned whilst trying to hold a panel in place... or is that a good thing? think i have just realised why the skin on my fingers are not hard any more.

i do need to save a little bit of cash for welding gas, but i have a plan.
i need to get my hands on a modern (Red) 9kg CO2 fire extinguisher.
ahh but listen to this, i can pay out £14 for a 600g cylinder of co2 welding gas.. OR i could pay £15 to get a 9KG (9000gram) co2 fire extinguisher refilled.
not to mention that the 9kg worth of co2 would last about a year!

ahh bex,

well so i decide to check just how much oil is in the gearbox.. so i remove the fill plug.. hmm none in sight.. maybe its just a bit low..

get a bowl and undo the bottom plug..

shining bright.. not a drop in sight

inner cv boots look good.. the gear box seals though.. they do not..

i have some opened old gearbox oil from -gods knows what- totally the wrong spec but after cleaning the gearbox up, i have put that in with a bit of cardboard under the box to see if i can see where its loosing oil from working on the theory here of any oil has got to be better than no oil.. of course it is only temporary. when i get the box all sealed up i'll use oil of the correct spec.. or near enough anyway.

that is given the gearbox is not toast. keeping in mind it was sold with gearbox faults.

ive already stuck some feelers out for a replacement gearbox... (again - memories of Talon)

if i cant get hold of one ill nab the one from out of Fallout till one comes available. at least that one does have oil in it.. i think.. maybe to the CV boots.. theres a lot of it on the drive since i started prodding at the thing. dont think it leaked before.

also if the box is coming off it will a new clutch fitted too.

rear brake cylinders ordered.. should be here soon.
new rear brake pipes yet to be made.. the rear flexi hose is in good condition.

front flexi hoses look to be new. metal bits not rusted to hell yet. should save on costs..

i am expecting the delivery of the sills and other goodies from Italy later on today.

grinder at the ready, new cutting disc already fitted..

man i hope this all goes well. i have never done this kind of body repair before. it looks simple enough. it seems simple enough.. lets hope my luck wont strike me down and deliver another crippling blow.

soon as the sills are done it will just be a car with a broken gearbox.. maybe.. heres to hope.

Never fancied tackling a box yourself?
Full rebuild having a panda workshop manual might have all the strip down procedures . .

right guys im sorry to have to say this but i think bex is a lost cause.

i am chasing rust so deep into bex i would have to cut out a lot of panels to get into it all. sadly my idea of welding is not patching over things. i like to cut stuff out first then weld a whole new section in.

with gearbox issues and rust holes in holes, box sections paper thin, and lots more unseen filler i would have to work so hard with this to make it even ok spec. it would take me a long time.

theres a video on it.. a long one.. where i make the choice to not go ahead with the repair.

i am going to dismantle everything from off the car. if its bolted on.. its coming off.

i dont have the space for a full sized parts car (yeah i know the garden here is stupidly huge but i have no access to it)

it breaks my heart to be the destroyer of a thing i love so much but at the end of the day i have to do what is best. in the event of a crash, the car would not hold up well.
i am just happy that all the parts will one day be put to good use when a part on another panda fails.

153k miles. thats a damn good run for a panda 4x4.
lets hope our 4x4s make it to that grand mileage, and way way beyond.

Just watching the vid now, at the part where you say you don't know what to do, but tbh what i see on the vid, i agree it's too far gone and it's better to break.

Sad day and never an easy decision, but if parts from it go on to other panda's and in turn save them, then it's done good work and kinda lives on. Better way to think of it :)
