Panda My Green Panda!.

Introduction

Hey! thought i would start a progress thread on my Panda i bought two weeks ago:D

Few weeks ago i was looking for a car and very nearly bought a 1980's Nissan Micra, but the sale didn't happen as the guy couldn't get the V5.
So i went back on ebay and found a 04 Green Panda in leeds being broken because the power steering didn't work, so i gave him a call and offered £850 and he accepted so the next day i was 300miles from home in my panda!(y)

Then drove 3miles down the road and broke down:rolleyes: so got dad under the bonnet and after playing with the loom we found if the loom was held towards the front the car worked (enough). So tied the loom with a hair-band we found in the car and drove 300miles home:yum:

Gave the car a service and a thermostat as it was running cold and the car worked great, went to change the oil peeled back some of the flakey paint on the sump and it turned into a sieve! So replaced that and now the car is running perfect!

Enough of the boring stuff heres some pics!:slayer:

Day i got it..

With my mums 61 plate panda

My dice and replaced the broken CD player.

Painted the wheels

Underseal

Today

My new tyres! replaced the 4 odd bald 155/80 tyres with new 175/70 :yum:
You can get the kit by LuK (people on here told me they are better than Genuine!) for £50 on eBay, mine arrived the other day.

Here's the link:

Here's an alignment tool (I bought this one too)

Three tins of clutch / brake cleaner, why not!

Bought all of this, doing ours on Friday apparently

Plan to change the clutch this week! Any advice? :worship:

Plan to change the clutch and also change the gearbox input shaft bearing. The latter was known on older cars to leak oil and ruin new clutches. Probably the irritation of fitting the new clutch was just enough to finish off an already wobbling bearing and seal.

Info here for the Punto Mk2 but it's much the same.

The guy who posted the thread had problems getting his old oil seal out of the casing. There are two ways.

1 - Drill the seal and screw in a self tapping screw - ideally two at opposite sides. Lever the seal out with a small crowbar under the self tapper screw heads. Tap the new seal in around the rim keeping it as square as possible. Some say to use a well fitting socket spanner but that can distort the seal's metal inner ring.

2 - If you have access to the inside of the casing, find a socket just small enough to fit behind the seal. Fit the long extension bar and whack the seal out. One good thump should do it.

If you have to resort to a drift from the inside take care to keep the seal square. Damage to the machined seal hole could cause oil leaks. Unlikely, agreed, but there's no need to bosh it out.

Thanks, great help DaveMcT

Before I start on that I checked over the rear axle..
Considering ages and mileage it looked pretty decent! So just have it a anti rust coat an some paint.

Bit of a mess but its just a daily use and a abuse car so doesn't need to be show ready.
It did win a concourse though in 2011? I think.

gearbox removal begins...

It looks mad!!!

Really hope it works for you.

We're doing mines on Friday night!!!

Very very interesting to see, thanks for taking the time to post.

I've three tins of clutch cleaner to clean it all up.

What seal glue are you using to reassemble it out of interest?

I ordered Loctite 518 but if it's not here by Friday will have to use a locally available product instead

Please let us know if the improvements you made fix the original problems too in regards to the gears.

I know I've a grinding noise which we think is the input bearing as well as the Slave cylinder and selector fork to fit to get rid of a creaking noise.

Is the box intimidating to understand once cracked open?

Doesn't get much more scary then removing the gear box witch having not really any mechanical experience other then service stuff previously was fairly scary. :D

It only took about 5hours for me to do this with help from my dad who at this point he struggles to move really :p

Considering we where quoted £450 to have this done at a garage it was well worth giving a go! (y)

Just really hope it works.

The old clutch must have had a lot of miles on it! because the "diaphragm" spring had worn over half way though and the springs in the clutch plate seemed really loose.

Very excited to hear the results of your job.

Us Fiat owners are doing a good job of helping eachother and saving eachother hundreds, and I owe all my thanks to the forum. One of the best things about the car ownership is this site :D

We'll be likely starting tomorrow (Friday) night at 7.

We're going to have four axel stands, and hopefully this'll be high enough!

To be fair, even if you totally f*cked it up, for about £200 you can get a reconditioned gearbox and fit it yourself, and salvage parts from the one you have and STILL spend less than the £450 for fitting - but I don't think you'll need to.

My uncle whose helping me has a lot of handy experience with cars, but never with the gear box. Why resist a challenge but?!

I'm not sure the condition of my clutch, but with creaks, leaks and bunny hops and grinding noises under load all signs point toward giving it a good recondition best we can.

won't be too happy if the gearbox is fine and I've wasted the money, but still great experience learning how to change a clutch. I imagine the procedure is the same for many new petrol fiats and maybe in the future I can do it again :D

How was your flywheel? Some people said to me I'll need to get it flattened if it's ruined :'(

Flywheels complete with clutch are £50 on eBay. Hardly worth having the old one machined.

Gearboxes are about £200 to £250. But you can get reconditioned boxes fitted for not much more at these people (various locations) http://www.mandttransmissions.co.uk/gearboxes_sheffield.html

Input shafts seem to be in short supply but you could talk to M&T Transmissions. It's not hard to DIY fit the input shaft.

It works perfectly! Very happy! :D:D:D:D

Gave the fleet a clean and back to work tomorrow (n):(

Want to get back under it and get some of it painted up, noticed the front arches where it didn't get wax oiled are starting to flake (the bits that are usually the same color as the car), But i'll leave it a week or two, as long as its done before winter comes, at least the axle looks safe! (y)

Dammit. We're more concerned with the whole 'ordering it tomorrow means no car until Wednesday next week' thing. :-/ Hence my big thread asking everyone what I should order.. hope we don't have any problems!

Nice fleet you have there tenpastnine, how is the Sandero compared to your Fiats?

Dacia is my jump ship brand should Fiat ever go in a direction I don't like (e.g. too German, big, expensive and powerful) haha
