Whos come off winter tyres?

I'll maybe hold off another week or two. Attached pics from yesterday at Belfast zoo. Spot the tiger!

Alfa and Fiat are on Pirelli summer tyres for a week now.
Alfa needed an allignment, was taken care of last wednesday.
Friday it was of to the TechnoClassica in Essen Germany, that's a 2,5 hour drive on German, "no speedlimit" (!!) Autobahn....I'd rather do this on 17" Pirelli summer tyres...!!
Only three cars were going faster than me, 2 VW's and 1 Mercedes....(n)

If i had the option of hitting the auto-barn - id be off the winters and onto the summers too for that!
Much better on 185 15 vs 165 14's

Im going to look again in a week
its only just getting above 7's when i could forwell be driving

we have 1 warm winter people forget the ones where it was freezing all the time

Well, it's been 3 winters since any snow worth talking about fell. We did have 3 unusually cold winters before that..I got new tyre socks when I got my new car and they are still mint in box other than a test fitting..

This was 2013

been looking at Michelin CrossClimate for my new van what they like in the wet?


They have been a brilliant all rounder on mine - I originally had Michellin Primacy 3's on before and I haven't noticed any loss of dry grip or wet grip at all.

They slightly noisy when accelerating because of the tread pattern, But this has gone now they have worn in.

They also seem to be lasting well.

When i was young and noobish - i brough em
Sat in the shed / boot and never been used except test fitted
Shame really

Would have been cool to drive past people with them - knowing i AINT STUCK :D

As I'm sure you're aware...:)

the UK's" Winter Tyres ", aren't really designed for snow / ice as such

the softer rubber compounds are what makes the difference ..
even in +2 to +10'C.,

I've had Euro spec winters - complete with the holes to screw in the steel spikes..(panda)
FAR more aggressive thread patterns than UK spec winter tyres,
TBH - if you live at altitude, or anywhere where you get 8 months of temps below 10'C then they are an excellent investment,

living in the Oxford area - I'd never really seen the need , but a chance encounter with a set of bargain winter spec tyres ( on an 8V punto mk2..) soon changed my opinion,
the vehicle just felt more "planted" on the road.as the rubber was actually doing it's job of gripping the road.

thanks, i chickened out didnt see any snow symbol on them that other all seasons have. so i just bought some rain tyres in the end, will look at winter set for the van later in the year

I had mine for the Suzuki before and used them for those 3 bad winters we had. Highlights were driving out of a car park where everyone..including those on winter tyres were stuck and passing another Suzuki swift that was stuck halfway up a hill. Used to get a lot of questions about them from taxi drivers.

I can see how they would work and be better under the correct conditions but I just tend to drive slower and leave more room for error if the temperature is below 5 degrees and avoid exposed or steep roads that aren't regularly gritted if the temperature is below 0. I am proper up north so we do occasionally have really low temps but if it's sheet ice or snow tyre socks are better than none studded winters and the main thing is driving to the conditions.

Probably change my tune first time we have proper snow fall given not had to drive the current car more than a few feet on snow with its wide low profile tyres but to get an effective set of winters I'll need new wheels as well.
