The timeless beauty of the Suzuki Celerio

The never ending joy of the Vauxhall Viva

The drop dead gorgeous Ford Ka +

Also 10 other cars all similarly grim/utilitarian (Hyundai/Kia/Toyota/Peugeot/Citroen, etc.) So picking out those 3 for being white goods seems unfair when the whole class is just as bad.

In all fairness the rest of the class isn't half as bad! Though bland, compared to Fiat yes I'd accept ;-)

The Ka+ and Viva are considerable to me to be honest. Just a shame they're not available in a more basic form.

Seeing as we're on cars we don't like, and this is Room 101, this seems a good time to mention a car I do like, and would happily own, but everyone I mention it to just laughs.

The Daihatsu Copen. Ta-dah.

My wife likes these and keeps on about getting one, the only problem is the terrible rust they suffer from, still cute though

If I was heading in that direction, I'd probably end up with one of these.

Although if you're heading down the KEI car route then they barely scratch the surface of the bonkers available.

How much more basic are we talking here? Guessing the only basic enough car would be a Sandero access.

Indeed, years ago a basic car meant no electric windows or other gubbins usually nothing more than a fuel gauge a steering wheel and a speedo.

Every single car on the market now will have a multitude of electronic gadgetry hidden away, safety systems and a selection of different finishes.

No new car is a basic car, extras just bolt on to the existing systems already installed.

Sometimes you end up paying more for a more basic model because no one wants a very low spec car so those cars cost more to make, having to pay to delete factory standard parts.

These new cars like the Viva and Ka+ especially, give a LOT of 'gimmicks' at standard for quite a low price! Compare it with a basic Panda, and it's night and day - you get like cruise control / leather / Vauxhall's OnStar service thing for less than a Panda Pop! For not much more, an automatic transmission too. Big bang-for-buck. Though looks are a personal preference, those two are my favourite none Fiats.

I just question whether or not the vast electronics will hold up well in cars with such low prices and high offerings - somethings got to give?!

Personally too, I'd avoid those cars as they're very nice (IMO) looking and styled quite well. I'd care too much if they got dented / scratched. Something I don't in my current Panda. For some reason, I picture a new Panda being able to take dents in its stride more than an angular, modern and sleeker car.

They will be absolutely fine.

Electronics will either die quickly or they will die due to an external force such as water or physical damage.

If it lasts 3 years without any problems then chances are it will last another 10 without issue.

It's only when a car is badly designed and fills with condensation or leaks that you face bigger problems.

Also depend on how the things are made. One example was my old mondeo cruise control Ecu (pre can) was could be opened but the electronics was set entirely in clear jelly so water could never get to the electronic components, obviously this was a bit special and I'd be surprised to find anything like that in a new car but they are still very well protected these days.

Older Fiat's for example do suffer failures but they are in cars that are getting on in years yet we're very cheap to buy at the time

haha I actually flipping love both of those - the Suzuki Cappucino was what I originally wanted, but seem harder to come by! I also love the round bubbly lights now after owning a 500. :D

Those gullwings though. Do want.

My wife likes these and keeps on about getting one, the only problem is the terrible rust they suffer from, still cute though

Glad I'm not the only one! (y)
Ahh, didn't even know they rusted - I guess that's future me's problem though!

If I could find a decent AZ1 for the right price that'd be my top choice, but you missed out the Honda Beat and - most recently - the Honda S660 - yes please!!

I've missed loads I know there's so much JDM bonkers available it's hard to keep up. Even the pensioner special Daihatsu Charade/cuore was available with a turbo and 4wd!

The Japanese had their retro phase 20 years before we did...

Bizzare to think this car is a contemporary of both the R32 skyline and the sunny.

I've got to be honest, I also rather like both the Copen and the Cappuccino, and I also rather like the Nissan Figaro too. A lot of people will sneer, but I do love small cars. I will always have a colossal fondness for the Daewoo Matiz.

It must be said, the current choice of city midgets is pretty grim. I do quite like the Viva, I like the 500, and I especially like the Panda. Aside from those 3, the only car that gets close to being acceptable in the looks dept is the i10. The picture put on here is the 1st I've ever seen of a new Ka, and I've got to say, it's absolutely bl00dy hideous!!

puntofan01 I think even the Korean cars are better looking than the Currys Appliance Club Cars lol If they tried to raise the prices of cars built in the EU over the next few years though, that'd be the only way I'd buy a Korean car, to boycott the EU! Though I hope that doesn't happen of course because of Fiat!

Haha my art teacher had a Figaro, and so do hipster friends, so I'm not quite so keen on it, although I can appreciate the appeal.

New KA is grim, looks like a squashed Ford (insert any other Ford model here).
