Just something I am interesting in,

When brand new cars arrive in the uk, when are they assigned their reg numbers? Is it when they're placed in the compound or is it when they have been purchased? Do the dealerships have facility to print number plates if this is the case?

Sorry if this is the wrong area - but it's just general info not fiat related :).

They are assigned a number plate at the point of sale. My 500 was registered with its plate the day before I picked it up. Dealers are assigned numbers that they can then allow customers too choose from.

some dealerships have a list of reg plates already allocated to them that they may let you choose from, this was the situation for my boss a few years back when he bought his Discovery 3

Perfect :) so if my new one doesn't have 14 plates I need to kick up a major fuss :D. I hope they let me choose.

If its brand new and you're the first owner it'll be a 14 plate, if its not then its a pre-reg and no longer can be classes as new ;)

:yeahthat:

I remember getting to pick the number plate for parents Yaris when purchased 13 years ago :)

Registrations are given to the vehicle when it is registered to a new owner (sold) This will be the first purchaser, or the garage in the case of demonstrators.

The Reg depends on where you are (or where the car is registered) as each registration office/area has it's own code. This denotes a portion of the registration - the rest is luck of the draw.

When you buy a new vehicle, it could have sat in a compound for some time since build. Typical time is two years from 'build' date - though some often sit longer. I once had to weld a car floor that had never been registered due to it being sat in a compound that was water logged for years.

Thanks, I'm fairly certain this isn't close to 2 years though, they've updated the bodywork & spec a few times in the past 2 years. The Easy now has upgraded trim compared to what it had 12 months ago.
