Hi folks

I was taking a look at the gf punto and when i checked the oil there was a strong smell of petrol from it. The car has always burnt quite a lot of oil and she complains of high fuel consumption.
Is this anything anyone has seen before? i was thinking a possible leaky injector

Possible, maybe.

You can always check fuel trims.

When was the last time of oil/filter change ?Maybe it's time to replace.

Oil + filter, fuel filter and air filter was done a few months ago, i change my oil every 6k and do the punto about the same.
So are you thinking an overfueling issue? would need a garage with a proper reader for this?
A friend has suggested leaky injector or head gasket (doubt this tho)

Have replaced oil and filter today so she can atleast drive this week.

Head gasket problems are extremely rare on these cars without a serious overheating caused by no coolant etc.

About how much oil consumption are we talking here between oil changes (6000miles) ?

Management light ever on ? Rough idle etc ?
You can check fuel trims with a cheap elm adapter and your phone if you own an iphone/android.

(is this the tjet version or na ?)

Yeah theres always coolant in there i check oils, water n stuff every other week, she only does around 9k a year and i have been adding around 300-500 ml every 6 weeks. I generally change hers twice a year.
I have a bluetooth obd2 but have never used it, can i use this with a decent program on my laptop.
No lights on dash. Gf complains that the car is driving a bit weird (after drilling down thinks she means lacking in power)

Na i think, 1.4 16v grande

Ok will take a look for an oil leak, there is no oil on the drive and cant say i have noticed the smell of oil burning on the engine. Am used to that smell as my old landrover leaks quite a bit lol.

Will dl that program and take a look later in the week. Hopefully will shed some light. Thanks for the replies cmosfxx

Other possible causes:
-short trips car does not warm up ...so it always runs in "cold start-up mode", leads to cylinder wall washing.
-thermostat stuck open -car does not warm up.. so it stays in "cold start-up mode" where it runs rich.
-MA or air/coolant temperature sensor...same as above... runs in cold start mode.
-old/slow/bad o2 sensor... does not know the correct fueling.. so runs rich
-missfire/bad sparkplugs /bad coils => leads to unburned fuel that ends up in the oil.
