Hi guys, new member here though I have referenced the forums a number of times in the past as my delightful '07 Grande Punto 1.2 has had it's fair share of issues in the past.

The latest issue that is troubling me at the moment is the worrying amount of time it seems to spend with it's Engine Management Light on. Sometimes it is only briefly, and at other times it can stick around for a day or two before turning off again. It seems to coincide with the engine temp dial not working.

Yesterday the Engine Warning beeped and I noticed that the dial didn't move throughout the 10 minute drive to work. When it has done this in the past, by the time I've gone to drive home the dial has worked but the light has remained on for a few drives more. This morning the temp dial is still not moving and the engine light remains on. Any suggestions as to why the Temperature is stuck on cold?! And, perhaps more importantly, what I can do to fix it?

I've had everything from the broken breather pipe, to the door that won't open from the inside, to the reluctant starting in the damp and under-revving when cold and wet! Can't wait to get shot of the orange b*****d!!

The Mother in Law fault code?!? :p

um.... in all seriousness I don't know what you're on about

Malfunction Indicator Lamp..., just another little thing I've picked up from the Forum haha.

When the MIL is lit, the engine control unit stores a fault code related to the malfunction, which can be retrieved with a scan tool and used for further diagnosis

Yep, get an EOBD fault code reader, or better a multiecuscan PC package, and read the fault codes from the ECU.

Otherwise we'll just be plucking suggestions out of the air.
If the MIL is on, there is a fault code on the ECU, so the car has at least some idea of what is wrong and wants to tell you!

OK, well I don't have one of those, so ordered one off t'interweb. I shall see what it says when it turns up! hopefully it'll be OK for the few short work-and-back journeys this week!

Any trouble starting the car?

no more than usual. Every now and then it doesn't like to start first (or on occasion, third) time, but currently it is doing OK.

Last night I did my quick run home and the situation was the same. I was in the house five minutes before popping back out again. This time, although the engine light beeped and came on the temperature dial is working fine again and has done since!

bet its only when the car is cold isnt it? ;) (the starting issue)

IF when you get the code reader you get this code:

P0115

have a GOOD READ OF ALL THIS THREAD...

btw you diagnostic port for the code reader is here:

(although the older GP dash the fog light switch stays in place stick your fingers inside the little open fronted cubby and open as per guide)

I'm currently having the same problem it's doing my head in. I just had the little computer thing plugged into my car and it was saying the fault is --coolant temp sensor-- but I had this changed about 2 month ago. Anyone got any advise on this ?

No, it's saying the fault is somewhere between the computer and sensor, could be wiring, voltage or the sensor. Manual diagnostics will still need to be undertaken, MIL codes are only for a indication of the direction to look for a fault (y)

XlTomm.

As suggested by Andy, it could be the MAP sensor.
It seems that there's some correlation between the Air Temerature Sensor and Coolant Temperature Sensor.

I'm sure someone who uses MultiEcuScan will be along to say whether or not this would give Air Temp and Coolant Temp readings to help diagnose ?
