I just recently brought my first fiat (2006 grande punto 1.4 sport), and soon after i think the electronic steering column has packed up.... I assume this as my steering wheel is acting funny and is shaking / vibrating, everytime i move the steering... my steering is also pretty unresponsive and after a full lock the steering moves out of full lock quite a bit by itself??

I just want to know from experienced fiat owners, and mechanics on this forum. do you guys reckon this is a steering column issue.

and secondly, my local breaker has got one in stock, and i am planning on putting the new steering column in my self! will it be a straight fit or need calibrating or anything that cant be done at home.

cheers, any advice would really be appreciated.

If I'm correct the electronic steering only helps you steer.
Thee wheel is attached to the metal bar so when you have full lock the wheels should'nt turn anymore.
If they do I would first check if everything is still in place.
Connection down the pedals.
Joints, bearing everything.

There is a very common fault with the steering column which causes symptoms similar to yours. Try using the search function or see the watchdog sticky towards the top of the forum.

Column needs calibration/pairing to car so can't all be done at home.

There is a company in bristol who specialise in fixing e-pas systems and often advertise punto units on e-bay.

IIRC Fiatecuscan will allow you to calibrate it (and the correct cables obviously

I was speaking to one of these Ebay companies, they were saying if i send them my unit, they can refurbish it but they want £250... I was wandering if it would work without any calibration if i do it, this way??

Or my other option is, buy one from my local breaker who wants only £80, but then i would have to get it calibrated, by an electrician?, or is it fiat only? if the electrician can do it, is it a quick job, or one that takes time, and therefore more labour costs!

thanks for your help!

another thing is that i have no lights on my dashboard to indicate any failure of my power / steering unit, is that normal?

cheers.

Needs a column

Depends on model, most (85%) don't.

Send me £250, i'll go to scrapyard and get one for £80, clean it up and post it to you.

Still needs a column.

replacement should be getting delivered soon, will I have to remove complete dashboard to put the column in, or is it a bit easier?

Take a look at the guide...THEN take a look at the comments..in there is a shortcut approach that I used, successfully.

You probably know this, but just in case, make sure the 'new' motor has the same part numbers as the old..that way its plug and play...
