Gearbox changed in 2001 cable to hydraulic clutch, post your vin number.

Thanks my vin number is zfa230000 06022450

Yours is pre hydraulic clutch, in terms of fixing your own box, third gear may just be the syncro in which case the synchro from the 2.8td boxes should be the same and the late 2.5td and the 1.8ton 2.8 na boxes so you rebuilder is bound to have a used one. The 5th gear 2.8td will fit also 5th from late 2.5td boxes will fit but the ratio may be slightlydifferent. Your rebuilder should have some options.

If you can find one the 2.8td box from the 1 and 1.4 ton vans should go in if you swap your speedo sensor.

Fifth gear parts are available but at the money you'd buy a whole box.

Hi

I wondered if you can help me. I have a 2002 facelift Peugeot Boxer motorhome which is technically the same as the Ducato.

I am trying to find out if it has the type of gearbox with 5th failure so I can add extra oil as a preventative.

It's VIN number is vf3zaamaa17124468

I have attached a photo of what looks like a bolt on 5th gear casing, but I was told the facelift 2002 model had this problem fixed so I am confused.

Are you able to offer me any advice here?

Thanks!

I can't comment on the VIN, but adding oil as a preventative measure needs caution. You need to ensure that the scuttle drain has been redirected, and oil replaced in your gearbox with the correct amount before thinking of anything else. These boxes are known for water ingress, which just raises the operating pressure in the gearbox until something eventually gives. Usually speedo drive, and then the box.

Adding oil without knowing if you are suffering ingress could make things worse - check first!

Thanks for the info

How would I check for water ingress?

I've read a lot of people topping these up and no mention of this so far?

Checking for water ingress:

Drain the old gearbox oil out and then both:-

A. Measure how much comes out; and then:

B. Also then let it settle in a clear container for 24 hours if possible, to see if any water suspended in it then sinks to a layer at the bottom of the container.
