Hi all i am new to this but need your help, my fiat 2.8d swift motorhome is very slow to get going,

1st gear just about moves it of,
2nd gear not that much better
3rd gear starts to move it a bit better
4th gear gets it going a bit faster, foot down but slow to get their
5th gear starts to get it going, max speed, 45,
clutch was just changed, new engine oil/filter.
Gearbox oil changed,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but still nothing,
It seems to want to go but what is keeping going like this i do not know, just lacks the power, i crawl from 1st to 4th and then only get 45/50 out of it, just need some help in trying to find out what it is,

your description of the problem is very entertaining but not very helpful

we need more info, was it more powerful? how many miles? have you looked under bonnet, are you leaving a cloud of black smoke behind you?

stuff like this will help

Hi,

I only got it the weekend but have no previous history, mine is also a 2000 swift sundance camper van. It has the 2.8d engine and has covered 67k miles and does not smoke. I've looked under the bonnet and changed the oil and coolant, there nothing other than a weeping diesel return pipe (ordered £21) that I've noticed.
Taking it for a drive it has no power/pull what so ever, I could get the van to 60mph max (no more) but as soon as it hits the slightest grandaunt I had to change down and sometimes down to third. the van blows no smoke out other that when revved fast/hard on the drive and it seems to rev freely.
Also the coolant fan seems to stay on a good 15-20mins after I pulled up and turned the engine off, the temp gauge sits at about 25% on the dash.

Hi
I also have a Fiat Ducato 2.8d 55k as part of a swift sundance .No smoke when driving and has recently been fully serviced and has a full service history. Leisurely is the way I describe its performance. It is OK when it's on the flat and gets up a head of steam but doesn't like hills . It will get there but ..it's pretty slow thank god for lay byes and passing areas. I used to tow a big caravan so 50mph is fine but going up hills that would be a happy occasion.
Any thoughts on some possible remedies....I had thought to see if you can chip these engines ( yes I know it's often an insurance issue and longevity with increased engine wear) as anything that will make it a little more oomph would be appreciated.

no "chipping" on the non turbo engines. Is the diesel pick up in the fuel tank clean? The timing could be out, dodgy injector(s) or injection pump.
Is there a Cat in the exhaust?

They aren't a lively engine, the turbo version is a world apart.

You could put a turbo in and either add an lda to your pump or swap for a pump with an lda.

Try another MAF its been proved faulty ones provide sluggishness or low power.
Your engine right enough wants to go but MAF just not sending back the right figures to the ECU..
Not some if this engine will run with MAF unplugged, someone said it wouldn't. But if it does run and runs better you have the answer.

2.8d is non turbo mechanical pump hed be a long time looking for a MAF ?

Ahh sorry about that too much common rail in my head with various cars...Anyway had to come back on hear as this can't be just forgotten about like the last time this fault was threaded on here. Was there an answer to it or did it end up in a garage or another forum. If I remember fueling for powering was done at the fuel pump via a line from the inlet manifold on boost pressures. Is this correct...

Yes well this does seem to be a problem with this engine and it's the Motorhomers with that weight up back thats complaining. Varoius ideas are talked about to increase the power: like increasing turbo boost, tweeking the pump, altering injector nozzles is interesting one, remapping (don't understand that one) and someone said change gearbox oil...Well as you are thinking we don't want black smoke and that was mentioned...Still to look into operation of the pump but the turbo boost might need checked into. In increasing the performance, thats if you actually have the designed output, the talk about increasing the turbo boost and tweeking the pump. But are you getting the required boost is the question. Is waste gate closing and opening as it should as carbon built up can cause power loss. Other thing is turbo actuator, is it actually operating, hose to it might be chooked cough cough with carbon. It of course would be great if parts around engine were easily at hand of course.

Turbo actuator link is a weak point on this engine. How many people running around with this issue. Boost reduced. Highlighted on this forum too around June (06) 2017. Interesting with pictures...

having read all posts I am confused I understand this 2.8d to be non turbo and yet turbo boost etc is frequently mentioned. so is it turbo or not to turbo that is the question,

They wrote 2.8d which is the normally aspirated engine, which is also supported by the fact they say it drives like a slug. However they haven't logged in since the 15th of April so they're probably stuck behind a tractor somewhere on lifes highway.

Well then thats the answer no Turbo...Should have figured that out...Bugger...damn...Like the 2.5TD 1992 Kontiki one I had, poor on hills..boy did I find that out in France in the Volcanic area....I still can't understand how the 2.5D pulled anything...How about rice pudding...Must get nurse to give me my seditive now...

i had all the problems discussed when I purchased my 2.5tdi (Iveco engine ) fiat ducato royale 14 coachbuilt 4 yrs ago flat as a fart wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding tried adjusting throttle cable to pump helped a little then when in France one day I decided to move the air intake hose away from the crossmember housing where attached moved the air intake hose to a position where it would get more air when travelling. BOOM I JUST LAID THE GOLDEN EGG difference was amazing truly unbelievable since the n I have cut an air cowl intake into my bonnet making sure the intake hose lines up when closing bonnet. I have now got a flying machine cruises motorway speed 75-80 change down to 4th at 62mph for hills and it just flys up in fourth I tend to keep the revs very high as they are a high rev engine and gets good MPG for that model. so I hope I have given room for thought.

Great idea there Jontee, I know what your referring to there regarding my 2.5td Kontiki. Might have been easier fitting collector/scoop at back of grill but well radiator is a problem. So you fitted a scoop on the bonnet, what do the Americans call that again ?
Forced air ?
Forced Air intake Induction !
Ahhh Ram Air Induction...Bet many Motorhomes like yours would run better with one fitted, especially the none turbo ones.
Are you's taking this in unturbo's....

it has Ram Air effect I cut a hole in bonnet then fitted a mesh fly-insect catcher on the underside then fitted a air ram type fitting over hole type of thing seen on subaru cars. t then lined the air hose in place so that when I opened and closed thr bonnet everything lined up. wether this modification would have the same effect on a non turbo I wouldn't know but experimenting could do no harm.
