Right so you want to give your cinq/sei a bit of oomph

1st thing to consider over the standard 1108cc engine is an upgrade to the 1242 unit

Engine upgrades

Now if that doest satisfy your power needs or you already have a 1242 then you need a turbo: D

This guide will mainly focus on the SPI (single point injection) engines for turbo’ing.
With the MPI (multi point) you could turbo it but it has a bit more work involved on the fuelling but follows the same basic principles.

Now the easiest option was to go to Van Aaken how ever unfortunately these have now been discontinued completely (but at time of editing they did still have a kit knocking about so you may get lucky?)
Van Aaken
There low boost conversion provides an increase from 54bhp to 85bhp and 63 to 92 lbs ft on an 1108 engine.
The turbo kit includes:

Garrett T15 Turbocharger
vAD Custom Exhaust Manifold
vAD Custom Stainless Steel Exhaust Down pipe .
vAD Stainless Steel Boost Pipe
Silicone Connecting Hoses .
Steel Braided Oil Feed Line
van Aaken MF2 module

Prior to discontinuing it, it cost around £1100 for the kit alone excluding fitting or postage if you’re to far away. remembering the whole thing would need to be set up on a rolling road after fitting adding at least another £100

Van Aaken used to provide a high boost conversion at an approx cost of £3000 fitted. though this was discontinued as it proved a little problematic for them.this had the same parts as the low boost kit but also an intercooler and low compression pistons or a compression lowering head gasket plate.
This put out in the region of 100bhp

If you want a high boost you will either need to buy a cinq already fitted with one or convert a low boost kit to high boost.

The low boost kit doesn’t involve low comp pistons etc and runs at 0.3 bar.it can be fitted to either the 1108 or 1242 SPI units fairly easily by anyone handy with the spanners.

Novitec do a 1.1 & 1.2 turbo conversion as well.
Novitec

there 1.1 kit puts out 101bhp and the 1.2 puts out 118bhp. Although the 1.2 costs 5099 euros, and the 1.1 3399 euros. This includes fitting through novitec only and is not available as a DIY kit.

All of these kits are a bit pricey, what if I was to make my own?
Well forum member smokeme is the expert here.
Check out his site Smokeme
some info on pistons if you plan to high boost your cinq

Now that’s alright but what turbo engines can I just drop in?
Well the short answer is none :bang:

The 1.4 uno turbo engine will go in but requires serious inner wing mods plus lots more to make it fit.
It cost a forum member in the region of £3000 for an uno turbo conversion
some handy info here re: the 1.4
https://www.fiatforum.com/cinquecento-seicento/68899-chinq-engine.html?highlight=1.4
The punto GT engine whilst very similar to the uno sits a little higher so would need even more work!

Whilst you are doing the sums for a turbo conversion don’t forget the implications on insurance!

That looks OK to me custard (y)

Re: cinq turbo faq?

I thought I would add to this thread as I ran turbo cars now for ni on 10years.

THe thing that the Van Aaken kit misses out which i think for any sort of longevity and reliability is an oil cooler, something I think the Novatec kit includes but you would need to check on that if its something you are interested in.

As an example my integrale can easily see 100degress on the oil but only 70 on the water with a v.big oil cooler when using liberal amounts of boost, so imagine what the oil is doing in a Cinq unchecked and uncooled, I dread to think. A turbo can reach temps of up to 600degrees and not cooling it is a sure fire way of cooking the oil and leaving the bearings dry leading to expensive turbo failure. So I say why spend over a £1000 to not go that extra bit and spend £140 to keep it all healthy.

It is also worth noting that once the conversion is done your extra costs will not end there, bank on oil changes every 3000miles with good quality oil, Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W 50, Castrol RS 10W 60 or the daddy Motul 300V as turbo's eat oil rapidily and again if unchanged leads to bearing failure.

Spark plugs get a hard time to, so use a heat range lower and change every 2nd oil change to ensure a nice strong spark.

Always let the car idle for at least 30secs before switch off, longer if car has been using lots of boost this gives the system time to cool the turbo down and primw it with oil for next time you start up, if you don't the oil evaporates and next time you start the bearing in the turbo will be dry, again leading to premature bareing failure.

I ran R5GT turbos for years stuck to these rules and I never, and I say that again never, suffered a turbo failure, or in fact any breakdown apart from snapped clutch cable (sound familar) and alternator jamming over 5 years of drving and 50,000miles and that was with running both cars close to 200bhp from a 1400cc engine.

Most of all enjoy the benefits of a turbo, like the bucket loads of torque available that a N/A car can only dream of and take care of it and it will take care of you.

just to put it on one page......

Hi to all that have asked about the part codes for the oil-cooler fitted to my Cinq.

As many of you know mine is a hi-boost turbo which had its bonnet stuck up all day at Brooklands although I must confess to hanging around with the Lancia crowd & my mate J-P who had his integrale EVO1 Martini 6 plus his mates Repsol livered Carlos Sainz ex.works rallye car which you would have seen fly off the top of the hill with all 4 wheels locked up if you hung around till the last run at 4pm.

As an aside I have been asked if its worthwhile fitting one to a N/A car and well all I can say is yes, you may not need so many rows on the cooler but you will still benefit from it as the thermostat will not cool the oil until it's hot enough, as an aside a Pug 106 Rallye has one as standard equipment and many tuned Minis have them as well.

As for any turbo cars, its an absolute 100% necessity, and should be part of the Van Aaken or anyone elses conversion!

Anyway back on track the codes are as follows from my invoice;

OC1193 - 8 Oil Cooler 19Row 1/2BSP Male £64.71
OTSP1M Thermostatic sandwich plate 1/2BSP £33.44
626 Extension Screw M20 X 1.5 (make sure you get this as they sent me the wrong one at first and it didn't fit the screw from the oil filter comes off, tho I believe they have updated the system now to acknowledge the Cinq)
BRKT1 pair of cooler brackets (not used) £ 2.94
For anyone who has seen my car the cooler is situated in the far right corner of the car when looking at it, to achieve this I used;

HEFSW3 - 8 1/2BSP FML ST 1/2" Hose swaged 2@ £ 2.33
HEFSW93 - 8 1/2BSP FML 90 1/2" hose swaged 2@ £3.03
S100R6 - 8 Stainless 100R6 hose 1/2" ID 1.73M @ £9.36per/M
hoses @ 80 & 93cm ST/90 = £14.47
Less 10% to all items
UPS standard service £8.95
Total £124.17
VAT £21.73
this lot came to £145.90 which included postage at £10 but I did get a %10 discount as which is shown on my invoice on every item just because the guy on the phone thought it was to dear! so I would phone to order rather than use internet as you may get same service.

Re: THE cinq turbo faq.

:D

We started this project in january, and we are near the end!
It will be the start of pleasure if it work as we want!

Re: THE cinq turbo faq.

That is absolutely fantastic!

I had been talking to people about Turbocharging the 16v, and we had decided that It wouldnt fit a turbo in there....its fairly obvious that you have!

Is that on standard mounts? What turbo are you using?

Yes it's on standard mounts! We used a garret T2 turbo from Renault 5 GTT.;)
