Hi all, Ive come across a problem this evening whilst working on my 600 solving an oil leak.

Oil Leak.

Basically, i did an oil and filter change 3 weeks ago and changed the rocker gasket at the same time. Since then, ive gone through about 7 litres of oil as its losing it almost as fast as i put it in(not that fast but once ive driven around, it loses a lot).

The oil is all over the altenator, alt belt, both cam and cam belt and generally all over the place in that area of the engine.

The rocker is sealed tight but we stripped it down again today to look for the possible leak and replaced it once again.

I have spent this afternoon cleaning the all back that has been sprayed everywhere by the belts

Can anyone advise as to what it could possibly be with this vague description? Oil pump maybe(not quite sure what this looks like tbh)?

I cant see it being the head gasket personally from what i have seen this afternoon but its a possbility i suppose.

Any idea from experience or knowledge is welcomely received.

Water Leak

I have spent this afternoon degreasing and cleaning the engine back where the oil and dirt has settled from what looks like oil sprayed everywhere by it hitting the belts.

There is a round cap on the side of the head above the flywheel and beneath the cam. Whilst removing all the dirt from this area it start pouring water/coolant from a small hole in it. I am pretty sure there shouldnt be a hole in this.

I think there may have been a build up of dirt covering it, preventing it from leaking previously but after cleaning the oil and dirt back, this hole has now basically left my car unusable as it wont hold water, just leaks it out.

Can anyone advise as to what this part is that has the hole in it and if it is easy to replace, im pretty hands on with cars and do most work myself but am not totally clued up.

I have uploaded a video to youtube of the water leak. Excuse the sideways view, my phone being a bitch. And my heavy breathing, it was cold lol.

I will post vid in next post as it says i havent posted enough.

I would be grateful for any advice on this matter so that i can get it rectified asap. If anyone needs anymore info about the issue to help resolve it, please let me know as i may have been a bit vague here.

Thanks

That be a core plug. Looks like someone has been using water.

Tap in and tap out job.

Oil leak: Did you clean the breather? What torque did you do the cam cover bolts up to?

Cheers

D

Hi Rally,

Thank you firstly for the reply.

Thanks for highlighting the part spitting water. Without sounding silly, do you mean the car is using too much water?

Tap in, Tap out, Basically i can knock it out carefully and replace by knocking a replacement in?

RE: Oil breather - No i didnt replace it, it is dirty though, didnt think at the time. I've got an ITG throttlebody mount foam air filter then small unknown breather off the rocker pipe. Could this be the issue or part of?

As for torq, i didnt have access to a torq wrench so did it by hand to what i call tight enough so that is not movable but not so tight it takes a lot of pressure to undo. Could it be a case of over tightening? It is definitely not undertightened.

Again please excuse my lack of knowledge on these factors. I know quite a lot more than the average person on working on cars but have never really ventured into the area of gaskets, inner engine workings etc but know from 'common knowledge' how to go about it.

Thanks

What he ment is the previous might have been using water ONLY in the cooling system without adding in antifreeze or coolant which causes the rust of the core plug (the bit that water is coming out)

As for the breather pipe, if that is blocked, the excess pressure will causes the oil to blow out the cam cover gasket.

So i would replace core plug, clear breather hose, wipe everything down and sprinle powder (any) all over the engine so you can see clearly where it is leaking.

Many thanks for the replies people, cleared it up for me, much appreciated! :)

Time to crack on.

Going back to the core plug, can i just use the hole thats in it to pull it out and then knock a replacemnet in?

Hi

I'd clean the (any) residue in the core plug seal area e.g. a nylon pan scourer, and apply one of the setting proprietary sealents and tap in the new core plug. Let the sealant harden off before adding water...

yes they tap ou and go to fiat buy a new one about £5 they just tap back in use a big socket to tap it back in with

Can this be done without stripping the engine down ie crank pully and cam etc?

It looks like about 1mm of the engine mount is going over the core plug itself

i would say to get the mount of the way but a board of wood on a jack and jack up under the sump to support the engine the remove the mount do job replace mount i would say remove belt as well and replace it. it looks a bit contaminated with grease anyway

[UPDATE] Re: Seicento Oil leak & seperate Water Leak from Head?!?! Please help.

Hi all,

I have an update on the oil leak side of things. The water issue is now resolved.

Basically, ive cleaned the engine up and had it running and have sourced where the leak is coming from. It seems to be coming from a bolt on the oil pump or possibly from the oil pump seal, but it looks dry above the bolt area.

Can anyone give any light on this please?

Also, how many litres of oil should be put in and the exact type when changing oil as ive heard and read several different amounts and types from people now after going to buy more today as i know im going to have to drain it to rectify this issue.

Many Thanks in advance.

double check that its not leaking from the end of the rocker cover i had this even with a new rocker cover gasket it runs down the side of the head where you can barley see it and either runs down one of 2 ways on the water pump as in the first picture i can see some moisture next to the silicone sealer n the water pump

We double checked that. We worked from the rocker down checking for the leak, its bone dry areound the rocker and all the way down to this point so im 90% certain this is where the issue lies.
