Right Im flushing the engine so Im going to need to change the oil but Ive never done this. What is the best way to do this so as not to get covered in oil? Ive had a look and Im guessing the sump plug is the one which needs to be undone with an Allen key? Also how much oil do I put back in?
Just one other thing: When it was last serviced the bloke doing it told me that the HGT doesnt need an oil filter change as it has some kind of element in the sump, but when I was under the engine last night, just behind the alternator there was a thing which looks to me like an oil filter, so was he telling me a porky?
Thanks (y)

Not trying to hijack or anything but I don’t see the point of starting a new thread for my question. :p

My 96 1.4 has oil forming up round the drain plug, ive had a quick look and cant see where its coming from, nothing bad just leaves a drip on the street every once in a while and annoys the hell out of me :p

Question is everyone seems to say Bravo drain plugs are allen key type. My car has a hex-bolt type, looks like something from halfords so im getting worried its the wrong one or even be cross threaded or something.

The bolt head is at an angle is this normal too or is it bent?

Should I use a copper washer/gasket on the drain plug? (service and Haynes manuals does not specify)

Well soon as I get a torque wrench and enough time to do the job properly im gonna change the filter sump gasket and obviously oil.

"element in the sump" must be the biggest blag ever lol.

Jami my owners handbook says under 2.0 20v section;
engine sump 4.5 litres
engine sump and filter 5 liters

Dunno what brand im getting or if i should get fully synthetic yet :p

hello mate i would tread a little carefully with your sump plug as it sounds like someone has cobbled it up , it should have a allen key plug in it as far as im aware and this has a tapered thread , the fact that yours has a bolt in it together with the fact it looks bent seem to indicate that there is damage to the thread or some numpty has lost the sump plug and just stuck any old bolt in , im not to sure what the original thread is whether its a bspt or metric my guess would be bspt though , i hope this is some help to you .

JAMI-
best way to do it without making a mess is to have a large tray under the engine, and a funnel going in to an empty 5l oil can. when you loosen the sump plug keep applying p[ressure on it to push it again the sump, then you can fully loosen it without oil coming out, then when you're ready you can quickly pull it off avoiding burnt oily hands.

definately replace the oil filter.

you refill until it is on max on the dipstick, then run engine at idle for a minute to fill the oil filter and top up again to max.

ADRIAN-
the sump plug does sit at an angle, it points slighly rearward.
it should be a hex bolt, that is why an allen key can be used on it. it is an unusual size of 99% of allen key sets wont have the corect size. i bought a 1/2" drive bit especially for fiat/alfa sump plugs (£1.50) allowing me to use my ratchet, its much easier.
