Hi all,

Now we know that sadly, Blue & Me will not play back incoming txt messages to your iPhone whilst in the car... it just does not support it, however, with a little extra effort it IS possible, I have had it working perfectly for the last week or so. Here is what I did:

1 - Jailbreak your iPhone.
2 - Download and install the "iRealSMS" (http://www.irealsms.com/) app via Cydia (there is a free trial version that you can use to test it first if you want - if you decide you want it, it cost about £8).
3 - In the iRealSMS settings, tell it to use iRealSMS as the default messaging app on your iPhone, and enable the "Read New SMS" and "Bluetooth Only" options.
4 - Make sure you are sat in your car and that your iPhone is connected to your Blue & Me.
5 - Get somebody to send you a txt message!

That's it! It works a treat! Amazingly, it also responds to voice control just like the normal Blue & Me setup, so when a message comes in, your iPhone will first connect to Blue & Me and ask you (via the car speakers) "Do you want me to read the message from [message sender name]?" to which you can respond either "Yes" or "No" etc.

I never really had a reason to jailbreak my iphone before, but glad I did just to get this working!

Another tip if you decide to go down the jailbreak route, there is an app called "NoAccessorySplash" which will let you control your music playback from your iphone screen whilst it is connected to Blue & Me. Normally you would just get the white "Accessory Connected" screen when loading up the iPod app on your phone, but with this installed, it allows full playback and control via both your iPhone screen AND your normal car controls at the same time.

Jailbreaking will NOT I repeat NOT damage your phone in any way and is completely reversable. You have nothing to lose and loads to gain. I and all my friends (bar one) who have iphones have them jailbroken. Ah but why has one of my friends not done his?? Well his is a work phone and he would be sacked if the boss found out.

I have just brought a fiat 500 and experienced the problems mentioned here with the SMS text reader not working.

I was pleased that it looks like there is a way to get it working and as I have a jail broken iPhone I downloaded the irealsms. However the text reader still isn't working.

Apart from having the 'read sms' and 'Bluetooth only' settings ticked - are there any other settings that need to be switched on or off in order for the reader to work ?

I know there were a lot of posts about SMS to make it working on Blue and Me with IPhones and other smartphones.

But, does someone know which protocol is used to retrieve SMS on Blue and Me?

I think it could be the RSAP (Remote Sim Access Protocol) as it allows to read data on the SIM card.

But I want a confirmation about that.

Thank you for this, I already had a jailbroken iphone 4 running os5 and was gutted when it didnt read my messages, went with your advice and downloaded the sms app and its working a treat. Thanks again

I can't see the option to make the irealsms the default SMS client??

Also noaccessorysplash didn't work for me, but noaccsplash works great!!

I've sussed out why I couldn't get the reader to work.
The original post is now 18 months old. Since then we now have ios5 which has iMessage. If someone sends you a text from another apple device using iMessage then the text reader does not work. You need to switch off iMessage.

If you get a text from someone using a non apple phone, using an apple phone on ios4 or below, or on ios5 but out of wifi or 3G coverage, then the message reader will work with iMessage turned on.

So in short, the incoming message must not be sent to you via iMessage.
Only traditional text messages are supported.
