Don't you want another fiat.? Fiat 1.2 and 1.4 8v petrol engine are very good. Petrol engine models are usually cheaper to buy. :)

Its been a solid engine since 1984..

There were some poor running cars 2 years ago..but apart from that they are fine

But With 3 in the car the 500s not the best anyway.
Pandas were a better car..and cheaper..

Okay cool thanks, think I'm gonna get something a bit bigger and a 5 door ??

My wife now has a Hyundai i10, 2nd Gen, 1.2 Premium, bought it brand new last year, it's so far been excellent. The 1.2 engine is in my opinion, better than Fiat''s 1.2 engine, and I can say that having owned a 500 1.2. Ours has lots of extras that the standard 1.2 doesn't have, such as cruise control, full bluetooth/hands free, alloys, door mirror indicators etc.

Some may think the Hyundai i10 is boring, but it has four passenger doors, turns on a sixpence and is a highly regarded car. May not have the asethetics/appeal of the 500, but I can assure you from experience, so far it's a damn sight more reliable, the door handles don't break off, the instrument pod doesn't flash whenever it feels like it, it doesn't have stop/start, 30 quid road tax, 5 year warranty and 50mpg + on a motorway run. Couldn't agree more with Melanabb. Admittedly, you do pay quite a bit more buying from a franchised dealership, but you should hopefully get much more of a guarantee in so far as they will hopefully have checked the car fully, diagnostics, everything. Many independent traders won't have access to dealership diagnostic equipment and even they sometimes have to take a car to a main dealership for diagnosis, if they can be bothered! Let's face it, the independents are selling Bertie Bassetts, they can't possibly fix and diagnose every make of car they push through themselves. That being said, there are still some very very good independent garages with excellent reputations, so don't be put off going to another with sound testimonials.

Mushsgirl, you have had a very unfortunate experience buying the 500 you had, but you at least had the foresight to pay for it, or part of it on a credit card and that at least gave you plenty of financial protection. Make sure you do the same for the next purchase, whether that be from a dealership or independent. You can of course buy privately, but that can be an absolute minefield, traders posing as private sellers, private sellers who don't declare accident damage. I'm not saying they're all bad lol! but naturally, if folk think they can get away without declaring something, they bloody well will!

You'll be struggling to find anything really good under £5.5k with low miles, low tax, insurance etc. I know the 500 is a really good looking little car, but unless you can inch yourself toward a Fiat dealership and pay the premium that comes with it, you'll be risking it and it sounds like you definitely don't need the hassle!

Best of luck!

OK so I'm biased but here's a lovely car at your price point fully loaded and likely to be utterly reliable, I can also tell you its being sold by a Mazda Forum member, don't discount a larger car, they tend to be less desirable than small cute cars so are in comparison much cheaper for what you get, yes the tax is more, but you get so much more for your money;

Personally I would advise against buying ANY diesel car
