Technical 500s Wheel arch light access cover

Yep, that's the one.
£10 from the Fiat dealer ................. or £7 plus £10 p+p from ebay.

I'll take a trip into town. :)

Mick.

Just here.

Sorry, my mistake.
If I'd clicked and looked and given a post code, yes, the p+p is free.

Thanks, I'll give it some thought.
£7 versus £10 .......... but if I'm in town I may as well get one rather than waiting for the post man.

Dunno, but it's worth a thought ............ and save the price of a beer. :)

Cheers!
Mick.

Well, that's utterly bizzare Mick, because the ebay page that I'm looking at from the same seller is showing free postage and packing. I have absolutely no idea how two pages from the same seller can be showing different things....free postage 2nd class delivery, that's what it says. An extre 50p for first class or pay a load extra for special delivery.....

Ahh, we posted at the same time.....!

Drill holes and cable tie it
Like I said .................. :)

.........or maybe nylon tie-wraps. Easy to cut the lock off if and when I need to get back in there. Just a couple of drilled holes in the plastic wheel arch and cover.

Yes, that's my plan.

It's piddled it down almost all day today, or I would have had a go at working out the best place to drill and tie-wrap the one that's still there on the left.
Maybe have a go tomorrow.

If I do it, there'll be photographs to show how I did it.

Best wishes to all,
Mick.

Up thread, I said I made a new cover and used silicon to seal it in, but it fell off after a while. The wheel-arch plastic seems to be very "oily" and the silicon didn't stick too well.

Gaffa tape sounds a good idea. I'll give it thought.

I was wondering why I've lost two from the same side, and none from the other. Perhaps there's a tollerance issue with respect to the hole that it fits into. Gaffa tape would seal it nicely, but the wheel-arch would have to very clean indeed.

I think the idea of tie wraps is better, but it could be problematical in where to drill and fix.

I was hoping to get under the wheel-arches today, but it may not happen until later in the week.

Thanks,
Mick.

Hi guys,
As promised, here's a report upon how it went.
New cover arrived from Ebay yesterday, just in time for the clear weather ..... not all of us have somewhere to work on cars undercover.

First, I jacked the car up on both sides, securing with axle stands and with bricks behind the back wheels. Our drive is on a slope!

Both front wheels off and the access cover areas cleaned. I used WD40 and a rag.

I did the LH side first because I'm very righthanded and it would be easier to get at it and take the photographs.

I'd stewed on what to do for days, and concluded that gaffa tape wouldn't be the best idea due to the complex shape under the arch. All that remained, was for me to work out the best place for a couple of tie-wraps.

As an aside to the whole problem I've had, remember that the RHS has gone missing twice, but the LHS is original. This told me that there was something amiss with the access hole on the RHS as the covers are identical.

It soon became apparent - by looking at both sides at the same time - that the RHS hole is wider by about 3mm or even 4mm. Consequently, the thing doesn't fit securely, and only a quick knock would allow it to fall out! No wonder I've lost two.

Any road up, I'll let the photographs speak for themselves.

Thanks guys, and I thoroughly recommend folk do this simple job as they are now very securely in place - even the RHS one - and will NOT come out until I cut the tie-wraps. £10 or so apiece, and it becomes expensive.

Regards to all,
Mick.

PS:
Having difficulty uploading the photos.
I'll keep trying.

Just remembered.
When fitting the tie-wraps, you have to thread them right through the holes in the cover and the wheelarch BEFORE you fit the cover. :)

Then, fit the cover, pull the tie-wraps tight, then cut off the tails.

Mick.

Each time I've seen a 500 parked and I've been able to look, I've checked under the front wheelarches.

So far, from a check of half a dozen, I've seen one 500 with a cover missing, and two with an obvious new one fitted.

Looks like I'm not the only one with this problem.

Regards to all,
Mick.
