Hi everyone

Long time I come here, sadly it's now with bad news.

My Uno transmission just packed up. Don't know exactly what happened - diff or gearbox but the car simply packed up. Horrible grinding noise, looking wheels and gear comes off. It hardly drives at walking speed.

I don't know which options I have, but thinking of:
1) Fit a uno gearbox (can I get hold of one?)
2) Fit another fiat gearbox - don't even know if it is possible and it it is, if requires modifications
3) Sell the car
4) Scrape it (oh noooo)

I live in Guildford, car is in Leatherhead (at the moment).

Any shiny knight to my rescue (I am not a lady however :)).

Sorry I am trying to lighten things up but I am gutted beyond believe.

Thanks
Afonso

Hi everyone

It is with regret that I've concluded that I have no means to save my car. I will unfortunately have to scrap it. However, I am willing to give it to any of you in the fiatforum if you don't scrap it.

The car is in an office park and cannot leave it there for more than a few days.

Therefore, if nobody comes forward by Monday the 12th of September, I will get it scraped the next day.

Thanks again

It would be a shame to see this scrapped, but it would cost me to get it transported from Leatherhead to Wiltshire :(

Do you have any pictures of the car? I'd recommend starting a new thread in the section with pictures and a title with Uno Free to a Good Home or something like that.

Hopefully that way, we can gather you some interest and not have to scrap the poor thing!

EDIT: pop an ad in classifieds instead of new thread

Hi everyone

Thanks for everyone that has helped me with ideas and support. A few people shown interest in getting the car from me and if a good home is expected, I will be happy.
In case this doesn't materialise, I am looking for solutions of how to fix the car. These gearboxes are really difficult to get hold of but there seems to be a few C514 from Cinquecentos and Seicentos. Would it be possible to fit such gearboxes and if adaptations are needed (or parts transplanted) would this be doable?
Or, are any specialists that could actually overhaul the gearbox?

Thanks
Afonso

Sorry to hear that, It does sound like a diff planet wheel, which is only cheap & available, but the whole gearbox has to come apart to change it. I`m assuming yours is a pre-92 rod change/wet cup gearbox?

I have a 5-speed gearbox that has no 3rd gear which I`ve not got round to doing yet, & a 4 speed spare, but thats it. Theres also someone selling a diff on ebay for about £40 inc p&p.

You can put the later Punto/Sei etc boxes in, but you also have to change the driveshafts & fit the cable change gubbins. Can be done though.

I would offer to do it for you, but I really dont have time to do my own lot, let alone anyone elses!

I've spoken to nunesaf. He is going to get his Uno recovered to his house. Once there I'm going to go have a look and see what needs fixing. I'll get his little Uno running again. I might need some spares from that old busted box you got though A97UK ;)

This place is packed with top people!

Thank you all, I am now feeling hopeful I will have my old but pretty Uno back.

Hi

As I've discussed with Core, indeed I suspect it is the diff judging from the debris left on the floor (horrible view). I don't know what else got damaged but maybe the driveshafts are gone, the bell housing is a candidate too.

I wonder if I can take a diff from a 5-speed Punto? I am aware that it will change the ratios but that is the least of my concerns right now.

Thanks,
Afonso

As I found when mine went, the problem is that theres hardly any clearance between the diff outer gear ring & the cast alloy gearbox body, so, if any bits of the broken gear got trapped between, its likely to have cracked the outer casing.

The good news is, the 4 speed has the same main casing as the 5 speed, so you can swap everything over if it has broken the casing. It is incredibly fiddly & time consuming though, especially if you have a gearbox phobia, as I have, but you`d have to do pretty much the same amount of work to get to the diff.

I`ve also got a 5-Speed Panda box, which is fundamentally the same, but has a different end plate for the different mounting, however, I got it second hand & havent had it in a car, so cant vouch for its condition (was promised it was fine, but I dont know personally).

This is the diff on ebay which seems to be identical to my one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252535177889

Just a quick update.

The car is being nursed back home as I type this. Bits of the planet gears and pinon split it two on the floor -> diff failure obvious. Cannot see the gearbox case but it's extremely unlikely it is intact. Later tonight, if it doesn't rain, I'll make a more detailed inspection.

If anything internals literally ended up on the floor then it sounds like you`ll be needing a complete replacement.

How fast were you going when it happened? Mine did it as I was pulling out of a petrol station while on full lock, it got me 7 miles home at about 20-25mph.

Also, what year is yours Afonso? I thought yours was a later SPi one with `dry` driveshaft cups? Hydraulic clutch instead of cable? If so, you`ll have a C514 or C526 gearbox, not the pre-1992 C501 `wet cup` boxes that I have..

Working out which gearbox you`ve got can be a bit of a minefield, theres at least 3 different types used in FIRE Uno`s, 5 if you include the 4-speed models.

Although mine is a 1992 SPI, it has the old "template", just like the old Uno 45.
I have the C501 gearbox, with two rods for the gear linkage under the floor. Reverse operation is move to right and back - no pressing the gearleaver down.

This happened at walking speed but then I had to try to get the car moving as it was blocking the car park. And that made lots of bangs and horrendous noises.

Right, so its a C501 with a C514 2nd gear syncro only? So its straddling the 2 boxes. It is odd for an SPi one to have a wet cup box. They dont make it easy!

I`ll have to dig through my gearboxes to see which ones I have.

I don't know for sure if the it has C514 2nd gear syncro only?

I vaguely remembering someone saying that Fiat had too many old gearboxes around, having supplied these in some SPIs to get rid of all them. Of course with some configuration management issues...

Couldn't get under the car but attempTed to take some pics see attached file. I think I can see something odd... see if you can spot anything unusual

Are you able to photo the area circled in red in more detail? From the angle of the photo it looks like you've lost some of the gearbox casing and the internals are exposed.

Indeed the differential is exposed.

Which options do I have?

Would it be possible to get a c514 and transfer the gear selector control from my old gearbox so that I would need to change the linkage? Probably a stupid question...
