hey!

this car was meant as a cheapo stop gap whilst i fixed my classic mini... but like most of you, i cant not mess about with the things i own...

this is where im starting... bought off of my friend for the pricely sum of £50! with tax and MOT...

before i bought it he put new discs and pads in... and whacked 4 new winter tyres on... the only thing ive had to do was replace a sticking caliper in order to get it driving again...

now for £50 its obviously not going to be a minter:rolleyes:

one of the first mods i did was pull out the prehistoric grundig stereo and i wired in an ISO adapter from a polo... then stuck my fancy navsure unit in... although im having problems with the tilting of the screen cause of the countersunk position of the DIN apeture...

just today i was messing with the speaker system...
the origonal 100mm cardboard units had rotten and barely produced and noise... if it did it was crackly... so i whacked in 4 kenwood 100mm units i had in the mini and also threw in my reisen 6x9's into the parcel shelf too...

thats all for now... got a new wheel bearing to go in tomorow morning and will do the cv boots whilst its in peices... then need to sorce some new doors as these ones are absolutly shagged...

also need to find the cause of the 20mpg im getting out of it:S its only a 1372! im thinking its the engine temp sender as the car is slower when its hot... so i recon its staying on choke... if not that its a knackered lambda...

thanks for looking...

Chris

Nice work Chris :)

I'd do the same... it's worth getting it working as a runaround at least, even for after you've finished the Mini project. The brown corduroy interior is at least distinctive, unlike the grey velour of a Japanese car ;)

Sure you'll get that rust fixed, that is unusual to have inside-out rust in the top of a door like that, can't have been painted properly!

The bumper is a ten minute job, who cares about the rust behind that

As for the fuel economy, guess you're probably right about the lambda sensor but it would also be a good idea to have the single injector cleaned and fuel pressure tested?

-Alex

cheers alex...

ive sorted the problem now... it was the engine managment coolant tempurature sensor... the small blue ended one going into the inlet manifold... was £9 for a new one and thats upped my mpg from 21.3 to 47.7 so its all good on that front...

as for the rust im really confused cause the floorpan, sills doorsteps boot lid etc etc are all in fantastic condition... not rust at all! but 3 out of the 4 doors are absolutly f**cked!

im sniifing around at the moment for some turbo parts for this, manifold, plenum and garrett t25... and a turbo head of course... theres someone on the mini scene in a turbo'd metro van that i would very much like to beat at the anual mini show at santa pod... he running about 150 ponys so i want to aim for similar... which may mean sourcing a complete new engine as this on has done 140k and is burning oil nicely... the bores are probably like mirrors by now...

interior wise, i have a nice set of recaros sat in the basement so i might look for some similar cord material and try and recover them... would be pretty ****y me thinks...

now that the wheel bearing noise has gone and the car isnt eating fuel like a train i think id like to keep it, as it does have a certain lovable nature to it...

thats all for now... i need to keep on top of getting pictures of the stuff i do... although watching someone change a wheel bearing can be very boring indeed... lol

thanks for reading!

Great work, good diagnosis, here's hoping to see it in real good order very soon.
Love the write up.

todays problem...

on the way home from work the gearknob when floppy in the forward to back motion... had a look and on of the little gear selector ball joints had popped through... i popped it back on and went home but obviously they all need replacing:/ anyone know where i can source them?

Chris

Yes probably but I am a long way away, Alex is closer to you !- but if you can't find any near you can a couple of cable ties to the job for you.

Another option would take a bit of fiddling but might be worth exploring is using a rose joint.

well me and my mate fixed the bumper last night... took a self tapping screw and some cables ties to do... doesnt look too bad now either... so all is well...

turned up at the modified car meet on sunday... was pretty funny cause every assumed i was in a sleeper... lol i most certainly was not... but as soon as i told people it cost a meer £50 they loved it!

anyways... some pics...

now got a tonnes of stickers on the way to me from the person who organised the event... also got a 4 point sparco harness off my mate and ill be shoving the cb ariel from my mini onto this car very soon:)

also i shall be cleaning up these bad boys in the next week or so and whacking them in:

on my way back from town from picking up the rest of the bits i need for the rose joints... the rear engine mount snapped clean off in traffic...

put the engine back in... no worries... no lasting damage as far as i can see....

this is how we got it home anyways...
251197_10150335378535968_741470967_9723289_6069093_n.jpg

that's a paddy hopkirk roof bar and a ratchet strap holding it up off the floor whilst we towed it...

I merely got home, jacked it up, replaced the bolt that came out and set off on my way...

whilst i was at is tho i repaired the knackered gear linkages too...

just whilst i was packing things up i noticed the exhaust hanging low as well... i think the impact of the engine coming out broke the already goosed exhaust hanger on the back... luckily i had a new one laying around so i threw that on...

Hows the gears now then?
the gears are pretty damn mint actually!:D

theres still a tiny bit of play due to some were in various pins but i can live with it for now... when i get some time ill go through and tighten what else i can to take up as much slack as possible... as for the rose joint conversion tho, i cant reccomend it enough... only cost my £23.65 all together... and its pretty much never going to wear out...

if i do end up really messing about with this car i might look into making some of my own pivots for the gear linkage so i can adjust the throw of the shift, making a short shifter or some description...

The next challenge is the diamond-shaped thick steel plate with the three balljoints that ties the gear lever rods to the bellcranks on the steering rack clamp. I tried to make that out of three large rosejoints joined together but there wasn't enough angular twist in the rosejoints to get all the gears...

Unfortunately the original balljoints on that plate are likely to be loose by now... this applies to the 1988 Mk1 Turbo as well.

-Alex
-Alex

did you try spacing the rose joints up a little??? I didn't space mine initially when sticking the rods on so i couldnt get 5th or reverse... so i needed to space them from the plates with another nut and then bolt them down to give them the angular movement...

Chris

finally managed to take up the slack in the gear linkage, twas a loose connection nearer the gearbox on one of the little pivots... its not 100% tight, theres about 5mm movement side to side when in gear... but thats much better than its previous of 90mm... lol

driving it home from llandegla tonight i have decided i want to stick this on bike carbs if i can so i can try and improve the economy a tad... also it does go well in a straight line well but the handling is horrific... so im going to do something about that... starting with balljoints and ARB bushes, then maybe drop it a tad...

for now tho, i gave it the cb ariel off my mini...

quick plan drawn up for the future...

pull head off as the HG has blown a little (oil into the water system)
replace cam belt and tensioners...
strip head down and get skimmed and clean it up...
gasflow the inlet and exhaust ports as well as playing with the manifolds
lap in and refit everything...
modify my maniflow mini exhaust and custom make an exhaust system 1.75 inch in diameter from the head downwards...

might stick with the standard weber throttle body for now although im not sure...

Chris

stripped out the rear end today to make it lighter and more of a van for when im out biking... stripping it down i noticed some muddy water stains coming down from the arches and found some petty large holes:/
