General Temperature indicator

The temperature indicator on the wing mirror of my 500X broke some time ago. At the subsequent service the temperature shown on the dashboard was fixed at zero. It worked a treat. Now it’s come round to the next autumn and I can’t get the heating going. My main dealer advises me that I need a new temperature indicator (it’s OUTSIDE!) to allow the heating to work (INSIDE!). Whose daft idea was that? Also it’s going to cost a lot of money.
Any suggestions? Hints? Practical please

Yours is newer than I have dealt with..
But I cannot see what has changed

If the 'temporary fix' worked ok.. How has this been undone?
