Morning all

Drove a few hundreds miles yesterday listening to CDs and noticed while investigating something else when I got back that the back of the stereo was extremely hot - too hot to touch. I've not encountered this before but wondered if it might be an issue, or was it just because it was a hot day and the unit had been used for a few hours solid?

It's an aftermarket radio, installed before I got the car. Does the wiring look normal to you people in the know? :)

Is it normal

Don't know

Can anyone answer that with the information given

No

Why, too many unknown factors
All radios do get hot, some too hot to touch, some are worse than others due to poor design, imagine a 60w incandescent bulb, switch it on for 30 seconds it will burn your finger now imaging a 2w radio and in 15 minuites it's put out the same amount of power converter to heat and confind into a small square box

if you switch the radio on and it immediately gets hot you have a problem, hot after a long drive is probably normal

Yes the wiring is modified, it has to be for most third party radios to switch on and off with the ignition

Make, model of radio

It's very likely just to be normal heat

Some of the higher end radios have heat Pipes or other kind of active cooling,

It's not in an ideal place for air flow in cars

It's normally only a problem if turn the radio on and it's instantly hot

There one head unit that always gets very hot playing CDs, it's a design feature and people have added their own fans
