I am trying to install an SSD in my brothers PC. The SSD will eventually have the OS on once he has imaged it, he didn’t get the OS disc with the PC, so we have to work around).

He has an Asus Esseneio running Win 7 (not sure of the mobo). We have updated the BIOS, enabled AHCI mode. when the SSD is conected, it flashes BSOD and just hangs when trying to pass POST. I had a Google and it said that the drivers for this mode are not normally loaded and need to be turned on via a reg edit (done via a MS Fix It). We did this. No joy, we tried changing SATA ports, still nothing.

What are we doing wrong?

Are you saying you've cloned the HDD to the SSD, switched on AHCI and then tried to boot it? You're gonna have a bad time.

Just reinstall the OS, it'll save you so much bother in the longrun. There are things like TRIM that need to be on with SSDs, and when Windows realises it's being installed on an SSD then it sorts a lot of that out. Turns off defrag etc.

Just get a copy of the OS discs and use the licence code off the machine (there are tools out there that'll extract the key from the current install if you need it - lookup jellybean).

No, not cloned yet. that was the plan once the it was installed, but that seems to be tricky.
would love to reinstall the OS, but he doesnt have the disc, it never came with the machine (would help solve all the damn issues). We dont know anyone with it either.

Right now the issue is getting the machine to 'see' the drive. it just hangs and does not pass POST.
We are going to try it in another machine in a bit. Will report back.

He brought it back to the shop, exchanged it for a 60gig Vortex (other one was 64gig) and saved a tenner.
It is working well so far and has accepted Win 7. He is very happy.

It found it on SATA, he didnt change it to AHCI. Will this cause any issues?
