My Stilo (1.2) started misfiring, on cylinder no. 2 according to the diagnostic software.

I presume that's the second cylinder starting from the left when you look at it from the front.

That sparkplug wasn't in fact sparking, and after swapping around sparkplugs and the plunger-like things (whatever they are called) that bolt into the cylinder head and connect to the sparkplugs it seems that that must be the problem, because the failure to spark goes with it.

What are these things called, and do they just die sometimes? I presume it's easy enough and not too expensive to buy a new one.

You can buy them singly. Some people feel that once one has failed, you may as well replace all four for peace of mind. Or you can change them one by one as each one fails over time.
