Technical Sparkplug connector plungers

My Stilo (1.2) started misfiring, on cylinder no. 2 according to the diagnostic software.

I presume that's the second cylinder starting from the left when you look at it from the front.

That sparkplug wasn't in fact sparking, and after swapping around sparkplugs and the plunger-like things (whatever they are called) that bolt into the cylinder head and connect to the sparkplugs it seems that that must be the problem, because the failure to spark goes with it.

What are these things called, and do they just die sometimes? I presume it's easy enough and not too expensive to buy a new one.

They're called coils and they receive a low voltage signal from the ECU and boost it up to fire the spark in the plugs. Yes they do fail. You can buy replacements here:

Are they typically sold singly, or in packs of four - and should they all be replaced, or is it more sensible to replace them one at a time?

You can buy them singly. Some people feel that once one has failed, you may as well replace all four for peace of mind. Or you can change them one by one as each one fails over time.
