Just a quick question is it possible to upgrade a single core processor to a dual or quad core. Its currently a AMD athlon 64.

Just because it will physically fit in the socket doesn't mean the mobo will accept it.

Some Athlon X2s will fit a socket 939 mobo, but not all 939 mobos will accept them.
TBH when you can pick up a core 2 quad PC for about £300 is there much point pumping time and money into a system more than 1 or 2 years old? Probably better to buy a cheap unit, move your data over (keep the hard drive if you want) and sell on/give away the bits you no longer need.
