Technical rev counter stopped working.

Hi everyone. No.2 son came home from work on Friday and told us that his rev counter had stopped working. I've had a quick look under the bonnet and the sensor on the gearbox is still connected, couldn't really see much behind the dials from underneath and the threads here all seem to relate to upgrading to clusters WITH rev counters. He's recently had a head gasket and reskim, ( Cylinder Head Services, Bilston ), but I don't think that's related.
It's a Punto Mk1, 60 S 1.2, and any advice would be gratefully received.

Does the rev counter twitch when turning the ignition on if not sender is faulty

Rev counter has nothing to do with the gearbox.
