I can get my hands on a set of steel wheels with tyres.

The size of the tyres is 195/65R15.

Will this rub?

I need to be sure as I cannot test fit them.

As the original tyre is 205/45/17 I think 185 is rather narrow for the tyres.

195/60/15 is the more compatible size and won't rub.

196/65/15 is 3% larger than the stock 205/45/17 and though it won't neccisarily rub it will cause additional effort to rotate and knock the speedo out more than you'd maybe like.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html is a great tool for playing about with tyre sizes

But if your Speedo is anything like mine it will over-read by about 8 or 9% anyway so you will actually be correcting it to some extent.

I can get my hands on a set of steel wheels with tyres ... 195/65R15.

From the tyre options in my OH (07/2008) they all rotate within the envelope 833(±9) revs/ml. A 195/65R15 is outside that envelope – but not a lot. For example - a worn 195/65R15 will rotate about the same as a new 185/65R15 (824). Speedo variation is about +1.5 at 70mph when compared with a 185/65R15.

The problem here in UK (The Netherlands?) is that a 195/65R15 is outside spec - & as such would normally be declared as `non-standard’ with an insurer.

Whether it’s a practical fit on a 1.9 – I don’t know.

I have just bought a 15" steel wheel to use as a spare on my 1.9mjet and it fits great over the brake calipers.
