Hey all, I’ve built a parcel shelf for my ‘95 panda out of 19mm MDF, I took some pictures of the build and thought I’d share them here.

Tools I had/borrowed:

Screwdriver
Hand Saw
Files
Cordless Drill w/ 4mm bit

This is a shelf that the previous owner had made himself.

As you can see it’s basically just a cover, not much storage capacity.. maybe you could put an apple or banana on there if you wanted to.

Here is the MDF marked out. I basically just traced the outline of the blue one, with a few modifications so it fits better.

All cut up. About 10 or so trips downstairs to get it to fit properly. I have no driveway or back yard so all cutting/drilling done in the kitchen (other half is out for the day)

I made a template for the holes by taping the cardboard over the speaker and “very carefully” cutting the hole out with a steak knife. Hey I work with what I have...

Now for the hard part. Well it was actually the hard(er) part. The only real problem was the drill ran out of battery.

The hole drilled. Initially these wouldn’t budge with just straight holes, I had to swivel the bit around every other hole to remove more material. It actually bent the bit towards the end of the job!

Few good hits with the mallet and it popped out.

I thought this part was going to take way longer than it did. MDF is surprisingly easy to work with. All up it only took about 5 minutes to smooth the inside of each hole.

Holes all smoothed. I went over the edges too just to make it feel better.

Mounting the speakers was pretty straightforward, wanting to spend as little on this as possible, I reused the screws that came with the piece of scrap MDF. It’s hard to see in the picture, but the screws were about 7mm proud of the surface. Also the screw heads were only just big enough to hold the speakers on. I reckon if I went over a bump they’d pull through and the speakers would fall off.

I rummaged in my toolbox and found an odd solution. These are just nylon locking nuts, they acted as a spacer/washer and fit perfectly!! I read somewhere ‘if it’s stupid, but it works , then it’s not stupid’. Image1511896383.920687.jpg

Right now it’s an ‘almost’ finished product. Might give it a spray tomorrow and try and pick up a rug or some fabric to cover it. Will post pics of it mounted!!

If anyone wants I could measure it and do a drawing.

Cheers!

That's my kind of panda fettling!

I was going to make one myself but used wood to 'fix' a broken shelf instead.

BTW MDF is pretty horrible toxic stuff so I hope you used a mask with all that cutting and smoothing!
