We have been driving on winter tyres since the late 60s when winter tyres were knobblies and in our case, with stellite studs (on an Austin 1300 Estate).
Living in Belgrade for 3 years our driving was Jugoslavija, Austria and up across Germany to UK. After driving at 60+ for a short time, the tyres would overheat and the studs come out like bullets.
Over the years we have always had a set of winters which have gradually improved to use at speeds far beyond my requiements although studs are banned in Europe except for some Scandanavian countries.
In the UK, we bought a 1.8 Astra and the Dealer offered me a set of steelies as he had several spare. They turned out to be 1.6 4 Stud, not 1.8 5 Stud.
We used this each winter to Switzerland to carry the Ski gear until I chose to finish Skiing and take the MG F is fitted with optional 16in wheels but the HandBook states that they cannot be used with Snow Chains so a set of 15s were purchased for the winters.
Last Winter, wife bought a 500C 1.2 Dualogic with an Electric Sunroof. The idea of taking it to Switzerland excites her.
A quick look at the Car and Handbook shows 185/55/R15 but shows a Black Square indicating that snow chains cannot be used with them. The column showing Winter Tyre sizes show them to be the same. Eh. No black squares are shown but surely if chains cannot be fitted to summer then noway can they be fiteed to winter tyres. A no goer for Swiss Mountain roads where a sign with a chain covered wheel means go no further without chains.
OK, it will have to be 14in with 175/65/R14. I go off to the Dealer to price 14in steelies £100+ each plus VAT. Is this possible ??
We are old customers of MyTyres . Steelie with Dunlop tyre is £75, tyre alone £46 making £29 for the wheel including VAT but £9:50 Fitting/balancing and Shipping (cheaper than the local tyre dealer to fit).
Will fly out next month and take the 500 next year..
